LESSON 2
THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
CHPTRS.4-5
Matt.4:1-5:48
Chapter 4
Matt.4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
4:1 YAH SHUA TESTED BY THE DEVOURING ACCUSER Then Yah Shua is led by the Spirit of Holiness to the wilderness Aramaic NC
Mark says Spirit drove him into the wilderness. Mark 1:12-13 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.13 And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.
Matt.4:2-6 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, (40 symbol of testing and trial, closing in victory or defeat, also the number of years Hebrews wandered in wilderness) afterward He was hungry.3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. 6 For it is written: For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.”
4:2-6 to be tested by the devouring accuser: and he fasts forty days and forty nights and finally famishes. And the tester approaches, and words to him, If you are the Son of God, word that these stones become bread. And he answers, wording, It is scribed, Not by bread only, that Humanity lives, but by every word that goes from the mouth of Yah Veh. Then the devouring accuser leads him to the city of holiness and stands him upon on an edge of the priestal precinct: and words to him, If you are the Son of God, cast your soul below: for it is scribed, He misvahs his angels concerning you: and upon their hands they bear you lest you stub your foot on a stone. Taken from Psalm 91:11-12
A. The devil misquoted Scripture, left out a sentence, just like he misquoted what God had said to Eve in the garden.
Genesis 3:3-5 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” NKJ
Matt. 4:7-10 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.”
4:7-10 Yah Shua words to him, Again, it is scribed, Test not Yah Veh your God. Again, the devouring accuser takes him
to a great high mountain and shows him all the sovereigndoms of the world and their glory and words to him, all these I give you, if you fall and worship me. Then Yah Shua words to him, Go, Satan: for it is scribed, Yah Veh your God, Worship and him alone, serve. Aramaic NC
Taken from
Exodus 23:25; Deuteronomy 6:13; Deuteronomy 10:12, 20; Deut. 8:3, Ps 91:11-12. ESV
A.In this last passage some scholars say that the devil had the right to make this statement, “ All these things I will give to You if You fall down and worship me.”: The say that Adam committed high treason and allowed him to have it. I say satan assumed dominion over the earth and the world system at this time. He is a liar and a usurper.
B. JESUS WAS TEMPTED IN ALL THREE AREAS OR ORIGINS OF SIN, THE SAME TEMPTATION AS EVE.
1. LUST OF THE FLESH-for he was hungry (sin of the body)
2. LUST OF THE EYE- temptation to throw himself down and tempt God (sin of the soul)
3. PRIDE OF LIFE-temptation to possess kingdoms of the world (sin of the spirit)
Gen.3:6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and……………..
C. HE MET ALL THREE TEMPTATIONS WITH SCRIPTURAL TRUTH, SPOKEN OUT LOUD, WIELDING THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT; OUR NUMBER ONE WAY: to enforce the defeat of the devil.
Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; (offensive weapon)
D. The significance of Jesus’ temptations shows a foreshadowing of His ministry:
1. He would not accomplish his mission by using supernatural power from Holy Spirit
2. …………………. Not to work magic, not that He could.
3. …………………. Nor by compromising with the devil.
E. Jesus drained Himself of His God Power (called the Great Kenosis) and operated as a Man led by the Holy Spirit.
In Christian theology, kenosis (Greek: κένωσις, kénōsis, lit. [the act of emptying]) is the ‘self-emptying’ of Jesus’ own will and becoming entirely receptive to God’s divine will. The word ἐκένωσεν (ekénōsen) is used in Philippians 2:7, “[Jesus] made himself nothing …” (NIV), of no reputation (NKJ) or “…[he] emptied himself…”
Philippians 2:7 but [a]made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
F. The 1st ADAM FAILED THE FIRST TEMPTATION PLUNGING THE WHOLE RACE INTO A SENSE LEAD LIFE ONLY (eating from the knowledge of good and evil. Self) JESUS, THE 2ND ADAM, WAS FAITHFUL AND QUALIFIED HIMSELF TO BE THE SAVIOUR.
We will continue with Les.2 next week.
The blessings of the Lord are upon you whether by blood, adoption/sonship or assignment. The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. Prov. 10:22
