GENESIS REVEALED – LESSON 5

LESSON 5

NOAH AND THE FLOOD & POST FLOOD

INTRODUCTION – This section tells of the epic adventure of Noah and his family, and reveals that their salvation was conditioned on the building of an ark, and the saving of the animals with them.

The true context of Genesis and of Scripture is so much more than its historic and prophetic setting; it is a drama of redemption where the Maker of man succeeds to redeem his likeness and image in human form and thus reconcile himself with hostile humanity.

Genesis 6:1-10:32

Genesis Chapter 6

Gen.6:1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,

Gen. 6:2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.

(Gen 6:3) And Jehovah said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, in his erring; he is flesh. Yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.

(Gen 6:4) There were giants (Nephilim) in the earth in those days. And also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore to them, they were mighty men who existed of old, men of renown.

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and satan also came among them.

H5303–nephı̂yl nephil–nef-eel’, nef-eel’–From H5307; properly, a feller, that is, a bully or tyrant: – giant. from the Hebrew word Naphal, which means to fall upon, meaning they were creatures of violence.

Who are the sons of God and the Nephilim?

Who are the “sons of God” and the Nephilim in Genesis 6:4? If the Nephilim were a race of giants, how could they appear both before and after the Flood, which destroyed everyone except Noah and his family?

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days – and also afterward – when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

Genesis 7:23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.

Numbers 13:33 “We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

First, who are the “sons of God” and the “Nephilim”? There are three proposed interpretations:

“Sons of God” refers to fallen angels who lived on earth and married human women. The Nephilim are giants of extra-human strength who were the offspring of these marriages.
“Sons of God” refers to descendents of Seth, who were godly men who sinned by marrying descendents of Cain, who would have been pagans. The Nephilim were simply “heroes”, not giants, and may or may not have been the offspring of the mixed marriages.
“Sons of God” is better translated as “kings” or “sons of nobles” and “Nephilim” is best translated as “princes” or “great men.” That is, the “sons of God” were royalty or aristocrats who were generally immoral and married common women, possibly against their will or despite their already being married.

Explanations for view 1:

The phrase “sons of God” is used in Job 1:6 and 2:1 to describe angels, and apparently early Jewish writers interpreted this passage as referring to angels.

In support of the idea that angels came to live on earth and married human women, Jude 6 refers to “angels who…abandoned their own home,” and other passages describe angels as being able to assume human form (Heb 13:2, Gen 19:1-3). In Numbers 13:33, the Nephilim are described as giants.

Explanations against view 1:

“Sons of God” in the Job passages refers to “good” angels, and distinguishes them from Satan, the fallen angel. Since only fallen angels would be marrying humans, they wouldn’t be referred to as “sons of God.”

Mark 12:25 and Matthew 22:30 state that angels don’t marry. (Supporters of this view respond that these passages say that angels don’t marry in heaven, not that they can’t marry on earth.)

Num. 13:33 could be an exaggeration of the faithless spies. God seems to condemn mankind for the intermarrying in Gen 6:3, but says nothing about the angels, though they were at least as responsible for it as the humans.

Explanations for view 2:

Humans are referred to as children of God elsewhere in the Bible (Deut 14:1, Is 43:6, etc.)

Genesis 5 describes godly descendents of Seth (Enoch, Noah), while Lamech, one of Cain’s descendents, was also a murderer (Gen 4:23).

To support the “Nephilim weren’t offspring of the marriages” view: Gen 6:4 doesn’t explicitly say the Nephilim were offspring, only that they showed up at the same time the intermarriage was happening.

Explanations against view 2:

The Sethites don’t sound very godly, since only Noah and his family were spared from the flood. (However, “sons of God” may refer to generations previous to those whose sin brought about the flood.)

This interpretation requires that the phrases “men” and “daughters of men” have two different meanings within the same sentence. “Men” and “daughters of men” in v.1 would refer to all mankind and their daughters, but “daughters of men” in v. 2 would refer to Cainite women.

Explanations for view 3:

Contemporary rulers referred to themselves as sons of God – the Egyptian king was called “son of Re.”

The Hebrew word in the phrase “sons of God” is Elohim, which is elsewhere in the Bible translated as “judge” or other human authority (Ex 21:6, Ps 82:1)

Early translations of “sons of Elohim” rendered it as it as “sons of nobles” or “sons of kings”

The word “Nephilim” is associated in Gen 6:4 with “gibborim”, which means “mighty man of valor, strength, wealth, or power.”

Explanations against view 3:

While pagans referred to royalty as sons of God, Israelites did not, and nobles were not referred to as “sons of God.” This interpretation seems “forced” – a stretching of the meaning of the text.

Views:

seems unlikely to some scholars, especially considering the last explanation against it. Also it seems clear that “sons of God” does not have to refer to angels, fallen or not.
seems the most natural, but the explanations against it do present legitimate problems.
does seem rather strange, but the explanations against it aren’t very strong.

Regardless of which interpretation one accepts, there is no contradiction in the Nephilim appearing both before and after the Flood. Gen 6:4 does say, “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days – and also afterward.” If the Nephilim were giant offspring of humans and fallen angels, the fallen angels could have come back after the Flood and had more offspring. If the Nephilim were heroes or nobles, society after the Flood could produce heroes and nobles just as well as society before the Flood.

These are some of the most controversial verses in Scripture. And scholars dispute and argue about these all the time.

Like I said in Revelation, we are never to disfellowship because of a different opinion or view. We all agree that Jesus is Lord.

I personally lean toward–Seth line (righteous) line versus the Cainite line (sinful line) explanation.

These Scriptures along with others are non -weighty matters. As the Word says let’s concentrate on the weighty.

(Mat 23:23) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and you have left undone the weightier matters of the Law, judgment, mercy, and faith. You ought to have done these and not to leave the other undone.

(Mat 23:24) Blind guides who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

Explanations

Angels are sexless

Matthew 22:30 “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

Angelic possession of human bodies improbable. (Angels would have to be born , take the form of man, although they have assumed temporary bodies in Scripture)

God’s spirit did not strive with angels, but with men. Gen. 6:3

Fallen angels are not spoken of in the Scripture as “sons of God.”
Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?(shouting over the creative works of God, not evil angels, but righteous men)

The Nephilim (giants means violent ones) (claims that these were offspring of supposedly angel/human beings)
Numbers 13:33 “There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

The angels who fell from their first estate (Jude 6,7) were not the spirits in prison who sinned in Noah’s day.
1 Peter 4:6 For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

SONS OF GOD WERE MEN OF THE RIGHTEOUS SETH LINE.

Gen 6:3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh (man’s moral weakness and propensity to sin); yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Gen.6:4 There were giants (Nephilim, from the Hebrew word Naphal, which means to fall upon, meaning they were men of violence) on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

EXCERPTS FROM JEWISH HISTORIANS (ORAL HISTORY)

Some claim that the Daughters of Men were the children of Seth, whose father was Adam, not an angel; and their faces therefore resembled our own. Others, however, make the Sons of God pious descendants of Seth, and the Daughters of Men sinful descendants of Cain – explaining that when Abel died childless, mankind soon divided into two tribes; namely the Cainites who, apart from Enoch, where wholly evil, and the Sethites who were wholly righteous.

These Sethites inhabited a sacred mountain in the far north, near the Cave of Treasure – some take it for Mount Hermon. The Sethites were extraordinarily tall, like their ancestor; and by living so close to the Gate of Paradise, (Eden) won the name “Children of God.” Many Sethites took celibate vows, following Enoch’s example, and led the lives of anchorites.

The Cainites lived apart in a valley to the westward. Adam, on his deathbed, ordered Seth to separate his tribe from the Cainites; and each Sethite patriarch publicly repeated this order, generation after generation. By way of contrast, the Cainites practised unbridled debauchery, each keeping at least two wives: the first to bear children, the second to gratify his lust.

And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. Gen 4:19 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. Gen 4: 20 And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle (handle=without authority) the harp and organ. Gen 4: 21 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. Gen 4: 22

And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. Gen 4: 23

It was the Cainite’s punishment to have a hundred daughters borne them for each son; and this led to such husband-hunger that their women began to raid houses and carry off men. One day it pleased them to seduce them Sethites, after daubing their faces with rouge and powder, their eyes with antimony, and the soles of their feet with scarlet, dyeing their hair, putting on golden earrings, golden anklets, bracelets, and many-colored garments. In their ascent of the holy mountain, they twanged harps, blew trumpets, beat drums, sang, danced, clapped hands; then, having addressed the five hundred and twenty anchorites in cheerful voices, each caught hold of her victim and seduced him. These Sethites, after once succumbing to the Cainite women’s blandishments, became more unclean than dogs, and utterly forgot God’s laws.

You may want to read the book of Enoch which was not canonized. It is an interesting study. http://book-ofenoch.com/

Reasons The Book(s) of Enoch weren’t accepted as inspired canon.

What about the Book of Enoch?

The Book of Enoch is an ancient book that is attributed to Enoch, who is listed in the lineage from Seth to Noah. The Book of Enoch, Jewish traditions, and Josephus hold strongly to the idea that the sons of God were fallen angels and the Nephilim were offspring of such unions.5 Even the Jewish translators of the Septuagint, who were known to make errors, translated the Genesis 6 phrase as “angels of God,” revealing their beliefs. The Book of Enoch says in Chapter 6 and 7:

It is true that Jude 14–15 quotes from the book of Enoch (1:9). But that simply means that the quote used by Jude was inspired of God as Scripture. It gives no credence that any other verse in the book of Enoch is inspired.

So, is the book we have today really from pre-Flood Enoch? It wasn’t enough to make the Canon of Scripture—it mentions Mt. Sinai, which shouldn’t have existed until after the Flood, and Enoch lived long before the Flood. Rarely, if ever, do prophetic works reveal the future name of a place.

Historical and Internal Inconsistencies of the Book of Enoch

1) It is impossible to determine if Enoch, who lived close to 6,000 years ago, actually wrote the books, or that it was a much later false writer, a Pseudo Enoch, writing under the name of Enoch. If this were the true Enoch, his writings would pre-date Moses’ Torah and Job’s book by possibly 2000-3000 years, and would have been close to 1,000 years old when Noah carried it on the Ark to preserve it from the Great Flood.

However, most scholars agree that the earliest date of the earliest parts of Enoch is no earlier than 300 B.C….leaving a supposed undocumented of up towards 2,500 years where there is no historical account of the existence of this supposed book written by the original Enoch.

In comparison, the gap between when Moses lived, however, and the first known reference to the Torah is only about 300 years.

2) It was never canonized by the Jews into the Tanakh. (The O.T.)

3) While it was known by many early Christians, and considered by some, it was rejected by most. Of the pre-Nicene church fathers, only Tertullian considered it. Of the post-Nicene fathers, only Augustine considered it, but had concerns of parts of it.

4) The early English Bibles and first 1611 KJV bibles included additional ‘Apocryphal books’ as historical writings in their Bibles, but never included the Book of Enoch.

5) The earliest full copy of the BOE is dated to the 18th century A.D…..nearly 8,000 years after the patriarch Enoch supposedly wrote the BOE. Fragments have been found dated to the 1st century B.C. in the Quram caves, but those fragments weren’t complete book(s), only about 6 verses out of 2 chapters….whereas the full modern-day BOE has 108 chapters. The Jude and Peter quotations, supposedly from Enoch, are not found in any early Enoch manuscripts; not until the 18th century A.D. version arose do they appear.

6) If it was truly written by Enoch the patriarch, it would predate the rest of the Tanakh (O.T.) by thousands of years….yet not one O.T. writer mentions this book, or mentions any writings from Enoch to be in existance. The Book of Enoch was missing from human reference for thousands and thousands of years….yet Isaiah tells us in 40:8 that “God’s Word do not fade away”. Enoch took a very, very long vacation if it was truly written pre-Flood. Then, to compound things, when it did should up circa 200 B.C., it disappeared again for roughly 1,500 more years. It ‘faded away’ twice!!

7) Enoch chapter 6 lists 19 angels by name, as the ones who lead the rebellion and the fall of man. Enoch chapter 69 lists 21 angels by name, as the ones who lead the rebellion and the fall of man — and most of the ones listed are inconsistent and completely different than what was given in chapter 6.

8) Enoch chapter 7 teaches that the giants, who were created by Angels mating with humans, were 450 feet tall! That’s as tall as the Washington monument, and over half the length of the titanic. That’s 10 times taller than the largest known dinosaur skeleton ever found. How could human women birth creatures of this size?

9) Enoch chapter 71 teaches that the Sun revolves around the Earth, and that the Sun and the moon are the same size, and that the sun shines only 7 times brighter than the moon!

Again everyone is entitled to their opinion of the Book of Enoch and we will never disfellowship because of a belief.

Much of the preflood, Noah story and the flood is found in the Kabballah/Cabalah. The Kabballah system of thinking developed by rabbis, reached its peak about the 12th and 13th centuries, and influenced certain medieval and Renaissance Christian thinkers. It was based on a mystical method of interpreting Scripture by which initiates claimed to penetrate sacred mysteries. Among its central doctrines are, all creation is an emanation from the Deity and the soul exists from eternity.

Gen. 6:1-5-Summary/Review

The blending of good and bad populations creates a trend toward evil.

A.The “sons of God” – who were they?

1.One theory is that they were angels.

a.This might be based on the reference to “sons of God” in Job 1:6. “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and satan also came among them.”

(1)Some interpreters say that these “sons of God” were angels, since satan was among them.

(2)The man named Job was apparently among them, however, as one of the “sons of God.” (See Job 1:8)

The concept of divine beings marrying human beings can be compared to Greek mythology, where gods mated with humans to produce “demigods” and “demiurges.”

Another belief is that the “sons of God” are the representatives of the righteous branch of Adam’s family, descended from Seth.

The “daughters of men” are descendants of unrighteous Cain.

The mixing of righteous and unrighteous people in marriage has always been a source of trouble.

a.Esau’s marriage to some Hittite women was a worry to his parents. Genesis 26:34-35 “And when Esau was forty years old he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; [35] and they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.”

The Law of Moses forbade the marriage of Israelites to Gentiles. Deuteronomy 7:3-4 “Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons. [4] “For they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and He will quickly destroy you.”

The Law warned future kings against taking foreign wives. Deuteronomy 17:17 “Neither shall he (the king) multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.”

The many wives of King Solomon, and their evil influence on him, was used by Nehemiah against the Israelites, who returned from captivity and had married foreign wives. Nehemiah 13:26-27 “Did not Solomon king of Israel sin regarding these things? Yet among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless the foreign women caused even him to sin. [27] Do we then hear about you that you have committed all this great evil by acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”

The “mighty men of old” – Who were they?

Some scholars have connected them with the “Nephilim,” or giants of verse 4, but the Text indicates that the Giants were in existence before the “Mighty men.”.

(NOTE ) Some hold the opinion that the Nephilim may refer to the dinosaurs, and that they were destroyed in the flood. However, giants were mentioned after the flood.

Another supposition is that Nimrod, who was a “Mighty Hunter” (10:9), is somehow descended from them, but Nimrod had to be a descendant of one of the sons of Noah, since he lived after the flood.

Before we start the flood story. I want to address those who believe the book of Genesis and especially the flood is all allegorical.

al·le·go·ry

a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms; figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another.

symbolical narrative:

Allegorical Belief: The creation account is an allegory; its message is the spiritual truth contained in the allegory. This is a very old position in Christian interpretation, although until the conflict with science developed the account was usually (but not always) thought to be true both literally and allegorically. As is often the case with allegories, the precise meaning that’s supposed to be conveyed varies with the reader. This approach is also consistent with an inerrant Bible, but not with a fundamentalist style of literalism. More recent variations would make the account a metaphorical or a mythic representation of spiritual truths.

My belief is that Jesus is the Truth. We should also note the way Jesus treated as historical fact the accounts in the Old Testament, which religious and atheistic skeptics think are unbelievable mythology. These historical accounts include Adam and Eve as the first married couple (Matthew 19:3–6; Mark 10:3–9), Abel as the first prophet who was killed (Luke 11:50–51), Noah and the Flood (Matthew 24:38–39), Moses and the serpent in the wilderness (John 3:14), Moses and the manna from heaven to feed the Israelites in the wilderness (John 6:32–33, 49), the experiences of Lot and his wife (Luke 17:28–32), the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah (Matthew 10:15), the miracles of Elijah (Luke 4:25–27), and Jonah and the big fish (Matthew 12:40–41). As New Testament scholar John Wenham has compellingly argued, Jesus did not allegorize these accounts but took them as straightforward history, describing events that actually happened just as the Old Testament describes. Jesus used these accounts to teach His disciples that the events of His death, Resurrection, and Second Coming would likewise certainly happen in time-space reality.

However, much of Genesis is symbolic as well.

Gen.6:5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Related Scriptures

Matthew 24:37-38 “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.38 “For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,

Luke 17:26-27 “And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:27 “They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

Gen.6:6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.

KJ says He repented. (changed his mind/attitude)

Question: “Does God change His mind?”

Answer: Malachi 3:6 declares, “I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.” Similarly, James 1:17tells us, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” The meaning of Numbers 23:19is clear: “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” No, God does not change His mind. These verses assert that God is unchanging and unchangeable.

How then do we explain verses such as Genesis 6:6, “The LORD was grieved that He had made man on the earth, and His heart was filled with pain”? Also, Jonah 3:10, which says, “When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened.” Similarly, Exodus 32:14proclaims, “Then the LORD relented and did not bring on His people the disaster He had threatened.” These verses speak of the Lord “repenting” of something and seem to contradict the doctrine of God’s immutability. However, close examination of these passages reveals that these are not truly indications that God is capable of changing. In the original language, the word that is translated as “repent” or “relent” is the Hebrew expression “to be sorry for.” Being sorry for something does not mean that a change has occurred; it simply means there is regret for something that has taken place.

Consider Genesis 6:6: “…the LORD was grieved that He had made man on the earth.” This verse even goes on to say “His heart was filled with pain.” This verse declares that God had regret for creating man. However, obviously He did not reverse His decision. Instead, through Noah, He allowed man to continue to exist. The fact that we are alive today is proof that God did not change His mind about creating man. Also, the context of this passage is a description of the sinful state in which man was living, and it is man’s sinfulness that triggered God’s sorrow, not man’s existence. Consider Jonah 3:10: “…He had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He had threatened.” Again, the same Hebrew word is used, which translates “to be sorry for.” Why was God sorry for what He had planned for the Ninevites? Because they had a change in heart and as a result changed their ways from disobedience to obedience. God is entirely consistent. God was going to judge Nineveh because of its evil. However, Nineveh repented and changed its ways. As a result, God had mercy on Nineveh, which is entirely consistent with His character.

The Scriptures that are interpreted as God seeming to change His mind are human attempts to explain the actions of God. God was going to do something, but instead did something else. To us, that sounds like a change. But to God, who is omniscient and sovereign, it is not a change. God always knew what He was going to do. God does what He needs to do to cause humanity to fulfill His perfect plan.

“…declaring the end from the beginning, and from the past things which were not done, saying, My purpose shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure … What I have said, that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do” (Isaiah 46:10-11).

God does not regret His decisions, but He is saddened by some of what man sometimes does in response to His decisions. God does not change His mind but rather acts consistently with His Word in response to our actions.

Gen.6:7 So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.”

Destroy here is the permissive tense (I will allow man to be destroyed)

He saw the end and warned Noah. (Gen 6:13) And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them. And, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

But the earth was not completely destroyed. The land, seas, some vegetation still there.

In the original Hebrew, the verb is in the permissive sense rather than the causative sense.

The men who translated the Old Testament from Hebrew to English used the causative tense, so the Old Testament is filled with verses that say, “God did this. God did that. God smote this. God destroyed that.”

The permissive tense is best translated, “It was allowed.”

What does it mean that it repented the Lord, grieved the Lord, that He made man? Gen 6:6.

The traditional view is:

a.Repenteth means to sigh, to breath strongly, be sorry, pity. Grieved means hurt.

b.Gen 6:6–He was sorry He had made them. It broke His heart. (Living)

God did not create man for this pitiful state. He was sorry it came to this. He is a reluctant judge. (see previous explanation)
God does not regret His decisions, but He is saddened by some of what man sometimes does in response to His decisions. God does not change His mind but rather acts consistently with His Word in response to our actions.

We see the grace, mercy and long suffering of God. He gave the entire population of the world 120 years to repent.

a.During that entire period God worked to draw men to repentance, pleading with men. Gen 6:3

b.Enoch preached and prophesied during this period (Jude 14) and then suddenly disappeared. Gen 5:21-24

Enoch’s son, Methuselah, lived longer than anyone else in the Bible (969 years), and his name means “after him the flood”.

People saw Noah working on the ark for 120 years. Some worked for him. He preached during the entire period. II Pet 2:5

(2Pe 2:5) And He did not spare the old world, but saved Noah the eighth one, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.

People who knew Adam and Eve were alive during Noah’s lifetime. Methuselah, Noah’s grandfather, was alive during the last 243 years of Adam’s life. Adam’s grandson Enos died when Noah was 98. Noah’s father Lamech was alive during the last 50 years of Adam’s life. They possibly heard Adam talk about God and the Garden of Eden.

Gen.6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord

In ancient writings we find the name Noah meaning:

The Hebrew name נח Noah has two letters.

The first letter, נNun, represents a fish.
The second letter, חChet, is the root of the word Chai, “life.”

Gen. 6:8 found grace (Hebrew, grace, chen, meaning favor, kindness, affectionate regard, acts of mercy which are unmerited and undeserved) in the eyes of the Lord.

Grace is also- God’s freely given power that works in you.

~God’s power to help us do whatever it might be that we need to do at that very moment. “God has allotted to each a measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3)

We are told that we are living in the Dispensation of Grace. However, grace has always been. Grace is a Person, Jesus Christ.

Grace is God’s freely given power for enablement/ that works in you, His unmerited favor.

Chart of the Covenant of Grace

Many Christians across the world are now making the transition from legalism into grace. Legalism is the belief that my works are the basis of God’s acceptance and blessing. Grace is the belief that I am always accepted and qualified for every blessing because of the finished work of Jesus.

With legalism the focus is always upon self. With grace the focus is always upon Jesus. Legalism says, “Do”. Grace says, “Done!” There is nothing I can do to make God love me more; and there is nothing I can do that will make Him love me less. This is grace. When we try to relate to God and the Christian life through law-keeping, we leave the realm of grace. Legalism nullifies the grace of God.

But not everyone is convinced. Here are some of the popular objections I come across to the grace of God, and how I answer those objections:

“We all need rules to give us structure and goals, and to lead a better life”
Paul was deceived into thinking this, and he said it: “killed him spiritually”. Rom.7:11

Legalism actually incites us to sin, not holiness. The commandment puts a thought in our mind that wasn’t previously there, so that we obsess over it. And it touches the point of our rebellion. Rom.7:5,8

The Law is good, but our ‘marriage’ to it is bad, because the power-base in this marriage is the flesh, which is weak. Rom.7:18; 8:3. God’s plan for us is not to be married to the Law but to Christ. Rom.7:1-4. The law served as a tutor or school master to bring us to Christ.

(Gal 3:23-25) But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

“I believe in grace, but it needs to be balanced”
In other words, grace saves us but works keep us? Having begun in the Spirit are we to be made perfect by the flesh? (Gal.3;3)

What we call balance is really mixture.

Rom.11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Grace must stay pure in order to be radical and effective. Out of my being comes doing. I only do as Holy Spirit instructs.

“Grace is just a license to sin”
No, grace is the only thing that can get us out of sin. It is God’s ability in the place of our inability. It is God’s way of holiness. Rom.6:14

Some people might abuse grace and turn into licentiousness (lawlessness), but true grace is not an encouragement to sin. Titus 2:11-14

“I believe in grace, but we still have to do our part”
Our part is to believe that Jesus has done it all. John 6:29. Our full salvation is provided by Him.

The Christian lives by the faith of God. Rom.1:17; Gal.2:20

“But I believe that if you want God’s blessing, there is a price to pay”
Everything that God wants to do in our lives has already been paid for. False teachers try to get you to pay for what Christ has already paid for. Rom.8:32

We are already blessed with all things. Eph.1:3; 2 Pet.1:3

Good works are our free response to Holy Spirit, to what God has done for us. Any works that seek to pay for blessing and favor from God are dead works

“If there’s nothing I need to do, why should I do anything? Grace takes away the motive for Christian living”
Paul taught grace more than any other, and yet worked harder than all others. 1 Cor.15:10

If the only reason you serve, give, obey, etc. is to receive something from God in return, then grace does not remove the motive for giving, but rather it reveals your mercenary motive!

The only acceptable motive for serving, giving, obeying etc. is

2 Corinthians 8:9For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

2 Corinthians 9:8And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SLOPPY OR CHEAP GRACE OR HYPER GRACE

Again, Grace is God’s freely given (unmerited) power that works in you.

“Grace is the empowering presence and power of God that enables you to become the person that He sees when He looks at you.”

GRACE IN ALL ESSENCE IS A PERSON, JESUS CHRIST, YESHUA HA’ MESSIAH

Notice: With the book of Genesis (seed book, laws of first mention) the whole New Testament, New Covenant, can be taught.

Now back to Noah:

Gen.6:9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.10 And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

Gen. 6:13 And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Translating Genesis 6:13a

For example, according to many translations, the first part of Genesis 6:13 says that because God saw the great evil and violence that was upon the earth, God decided or determined that He would destroy everything living upon it. Here are three sample translations which show this perspective:

So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them…” (NIV).

And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh; for the earth is filled with violence through them…” (RSV).

So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence…” (NLT).

As can be seen from these two translations, the text seems to indicate that as a result of violence in the world, God decided or determined to send some violence of His own, and wipe out every living thing.

But a brief look at a few other English translations shows that another way of reading the text is possible:

And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them…” (NKJ).

And God said unto Noah, “The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them…” (KJV).

Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them…” (NAS).

These three translations show that the first part of Genesis 6:13 can clearly be translated in a different way. In contrast to the first three translations above, these second three translations show that it is not that God decided or determined to send destruction upon the earth, but that God saw that death and destruction was going to come upon the earth. The destruction of the earth had come before Him. The Hebrew literally reads that it had come “before His face,” or “into His presence.”

Earth continued to be out of order, corruption further weakened it.

Genesis 6 and Job 1

Though slightly different terminology is used, the imagery of Genesis 6:1-13 is echoed in many ways by Job 1:1-12. In both cases there are “sons of God” who are seen in some way to be antagonistic toward mankind (Genesis 6:1-2; Job 1:6). There is also in both accounts a blameless and righteous man who feared God and shunned evil (Genesis 6:9; Job 1:1). And in both cases, an evil power comes into the presence of God, seeking to kill and destroy (Genesis 6:13; Job 1:6, 12).

We will look at Job in more detail in later posts, but we mention it here just to show the parallels.

It is the destroyer who seeks to destroy; not God. God seeks to rescue, redeemed, and deliver. Due to the violence that was on the earth, God saw that all that was on the earth was about to be destroyed. The end of all flesh came into His presence.

There is a vast difference between deciding to send destruction and seeing that destruction will come. If I see a car spinning out of control down a street toward a crowd of pedestrians, and I shout out a warning to them, this is very different than somehow being the one who sends the car spinning out of control toward that crowd of pedestrians. So also with God and the flood. He saw that destruction was coming because of the violence on the earth. The text is quite clear that “the violence of ‘all flesh’ is the reason for the disaster.” (Fretheim, Creation Untamed, 52). This is the best and most literal way of understanding the first part of Genesis 6:13.

THERE HAD TO BE A PRESERVATION OF THE RIGHTEOUS LINE

Deuteronomy 30:19 “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;

Gen.6:14 “Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; (some kind of laminated wood, probably cypress) make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.

Cypress trees are large and strong, and in the post-Flood earth, at least, once grew abundantly in Chaldea and Armenia. Armenia is where the ark is believed to have landed, in the mountains of Ararat. Cypress is far from the only guess made by translators. Other trees and plants include pine, cedar, fir, ebony (Bockart), wicker (Geddes), juniper(Castellus), acacia (Religious Tract Society), boxwood, or slimedbulrushes (Dawson).

What’s wrong with all such guesses that attempt to identify a particular tree or plant with “gopher wood?” First, if “gopher” is a tree or a plant, it is not necessarily one that still exists today. Many plants have become extinct. We know little about the kinds of wood available to Noah in the pre-Flood world. No one today has seen the pre-Flood world; it was destroyed.

Other References:

The words “gopher” and “ets” (wood) used in Genesis 6:14 are translated in the Septuagint (LXX.) as “squared beams.”
The Vulgate version translated these same words as “planed wood.”
Some researchers have suggested that “gopher” may have referred to a lamination process, which might have been necessary considering the huge size of the ark (450 feet long or more). If true, the correct translation would be “laminated wood.”
Due to the similarity between a “g” and a “k” in the Hebrew alphabet (both resemble a backwards “C”), some have suggested that the first letter in the word “gopher” could be a scribal error, and that the word should be “kopher.” Kopher is a Hebrew word translated as “pitch” in Genesis 6:14. Pitch is a waterproof covering. (No one knows for sure what kind of pitch Noah used). But if this scribal error theory is correct, then the verse would properly read, in effect, “Make yourself an ark of pitched wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.”

Another reference said that:

There is no such wood called “gopher.” Scholars have debated its identity.

Symbolically, gopher wood is a tree.

In Hebrew , this passage is עצי־גפר. The first two letters עץ ets can be interpreted as “wood” or “tree.” There are two trees of significance in the Bible, both of which are written with עצ:

עץ החיים: the Tree of Life
עץ הדעת טוב ורע: the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil

This whole story started with the abuse of the Tree of Knowledge. It is why Adam and Eve had to leave the garden. Thus, the way to return is by the tree of life. Likewise, it then makes sense to translate עצ of this passage not as “wood,” but as “tree.”

The Hebrew word גפר gopher is shortened from גפרית, gophriyth, sulphur (called in the Bible “brimstone”). In Alchemy, sulphur is the symbol of fire. Thus, this passage actually says:

“Make thee a tebah [container] from the sulfurous tree…” – Gen 6:14

The sulfurous tree is the same as the “burning bush” seen by Moses. It is a “matchstick,” wood topped by sulphur, and used to start fires.

Many Scriptures describe God as fire.

So, symbolically the ark wood is a tree, the Tree of Life, Jesus.

Pitch in the Hebrew means atonement, a covering for sins, a foreshadowing of Jesus.

Moses’s mother made a similar ark:

Exodus 2:3 But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.

Gen.6:15 “And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.(450 ft. long,75 ft. wide, 45 ft. high)

The Bible specifies the perfect dimensions for a stable water vessel (Genesis 6:15). Modern ship builders are well aware that the ideal dimension for ship stability is a length six times that of the width. Keep in mind, God told Noah the ideal dimensions for the ark 4,500 years ago.

Ark Hebrew–Tebah תבה means “chest, box, case,” or “hull.” In short, tebah indicates a container

Although the word ark does not appear in the Hebrew scriptures (Tanakh or Torah), it does appear in the Latin translations of the Bible as “arca,” which translates into different words, including 1) a chest, both as a box and the trunk, and 2) also as a coffin, as that which Joseph in the Old Testament was placed within when he died.

Symbolically the flood describes water baptism, buried in Christ.

Summary: Gen. 6:6-15

The cause of the flood.

A.The Lord “monitors” conditions on the earth, and reacts to both good and evil

B .God saw that sin had become widespread.

Verse 11 adds that “the earth was corrupt,” and “filled with violence.”
“All flesh had corrupted their way.”

God regretted that he had made man, (see previous teaching)

Noah’s family that was favored by God, and exempted .(Compare 7:1.) Why because of his faith.

Noah is called a “righteous man” and “blameless” in verse 9.
In the same verse, he is said to have “walked with God.” This is the same praise that was given to Enoch, the patriarch who did not die (See 5:21).

3.Noah is also called “a preacher of righteousness.” 2 Peter 2:5 “(God) did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly…”

While Israel remained unrepentant in captivity, and needed deliverance, Noah’s benefit from his righteousness would not be transferred to them. Ezekiel 14:14 “…even though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job were in its midst, by their own righteousness they could only deliver themselves,” declares the Lord God.

It is interesting to read in Verse 13, (I allow their destruction) WITH the earth.” O f course, the earth was not completely destroyed.

He does not say, “IN the earth.”
God’s use of an extraordinary natural event accomplished His purpose.

Summary Continued:

God gives Noah the plan by which he will be saved from the destruction of the earth.

A.The design of the Ark.

1.The term “Ark” is an indication of the shape of the vessel.

The “Ark of the Covenant” was in the shape of a hollow box
The Ark built by Noah could have been, therefore, an enclosed vessel possibly in the shape of a modern barge.

The materials used in the Ark. a. God specified the use of “gopher wood.” (1)It is not known what sort of wood this is.
(2)Some modern translations say “resinous wood” or “Cypress.”

God called for the use of “pitch,” or asphalt, inside and out, to keep it from leaking.

Using a traditional rule of 18 inches as equal to 1 cubit, the dimensions of the Ark would have provided about 101,000 square feet of floor space on the three “decks,” and a volume of about 1,500,000 cubic feet.
Naval engineers have said that the size and shape of the Ark would be very seaworthy and stable, in the same proportion as a modern aircraft carrier

Gen.6:16 “You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.

FACTS ON NOAH’S ARK

Biblical Passages: Gen. 6-8; Matt. 24:37,38; Lk. 17:26,27; I Pet. 3:20;II Pet. 2:5.

The story of Noah and his family being spared from a world- wide deluge is one of the most important in the Old Testament.

The Design of the Ark

The Designer was God Himself. We do not need to assume Noah knew anything about ship-building. The instructions for design are given in Gen. 6:14ff.

Construction Materials The Bible says the Ark was to be built of “gopher wood”. “Gopher” is the actual Hebrew word. In early English translations the meaning of the word was unknown so it was left untranslated. The NIV translates it “cypress wood”, however, this is only a guess. It was undoubtedly translated this way due to the fact that cypress wood is highly resistant to rot. What this material was is still a mystery. It could have been a pre-flood wood with which we are not familiar. It is almost certain that Noah did not construct a standard wooden ship of the kind we are familiar. According to nautical engineers the longest wooden vessel ever built was 360 feet in length and was not seaworthy. Because of the wave action of the sea only wooden ships shorter than this will be seaworthy. Therefore, we must conclude that Noah used some other method of construction to overcome this problem.

The Design.

The Biblical word for Ark is “tebah”. It is used 28 times in the OT and is only used of Noah’s Ark and for the container in which Moses was hidden among the bulrushes. Because of a similar Egyptian word meaning “box”, and the ultimate purpose of the Ark, we believe the Ark was not like a streamlined vessel designed to easily glide through the water. More likely it was shaped like a rectangular barge which floated rather low in the water. From the story in the Bible, it also would appear that Noah had no control over the vessel. He, and it contents were at the total mercy of God.

The Ark had three stories with only one door. The phrase in Gen. 6:16, “Make a roof for it and finish the Ark to within 18 inches of the top.” is problematic in that the words used are obscure. Most commentators believe it means leave an 18 inch space at the top that is open all around the vessel. This then would be for ventilation, and when water entered it would drain out somewhere below, similar to the vents in cars.

The Ark was to be coated inside and out with pitch. Again the Hebrew word for “pitch” is atonement. Pitch is made from tar. It was used not only to waterproof the vessel but also to prevent decay. If Noah was 480 years old when God told him to build an Ark and 600 when the Flood came, it is reasonable to assume that the construction of the Ark took place during this 120 year period (See Gen. 6:3 along with I Pet. 3:20). The need for this preservative was essential. It is also possible that things did not decay as rapidly in the pre-flood atmosphere.

The phrase in the NIV (6:14) “make rooms” is also problematic in that the word is obscure. The Hebrew is “qnm”. Since Hebrew did not have any vowels when it was written, scholars speculate that the word could be either “qinnim” or “qanim”. The former would mean either “rooms” or “nest”, and the later, “reeds”. Most English translations translate as in the former. However, some of the better and more recent commentaries, believe it should be translated “reeds” since the context is building materials. If in reality it is “reeds”, then somehow reeds were part of the construction material. Large boats are still made from reeds and are very seaworthy. The Egyptians still use reeds for caulking their wooden ships.

The Size of the Ark (When considering its size it obviously was not the backyard effort of a primitive river-dweller!)

It is given in cubits as being 300 cubits long by 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high. A cubit in the OT was generally about 17.5 inches. However, an Egyptian royal cubit measured about 20.5 inches. Since Moses was educated in Egypt we must allow for the possibility that the longer measurement was meant here. The Ark, therefore, could have measured from 437 feet to 512 feet in length! It was not until the late 19th century that a ship anywhere near this size was built.

It’s Ratio -The Ark had a ratio (length x width x height) of 30 x 5 x 3. According to ship-builders, this ratio represents an advanced knowledge of ship-building since it is the optimum design for stability in rough seas. The Ark, as designed by God, was virtually impossible to capsize! It would have to have been tilted over 90 degrees in order to capsize.

Its Volume. With the shorter cubit the Ark would have an internal volume of 1,518,750 cubic feet, or the equivalent of 569 standard railroad boxcars. If the average sized animal was the size of a sheep it means the Ark could hold over 125,000 sheep. (Assuming the shape of the Ark to be rectangular there would have been over 100,000 sq. ft of floor space!)

Its construction though the Bible does not say, it seems reasonable that Noah employed a large group of workman to build the Ark. If Noah started building the Ark soon after God spoke to him, then the process of building the Ark may have taken close to 120 years.

Gen. 6:17 “And behold, I Myself am bringing floodwaters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die.

God is saying I am allowing the flood waters on the earth. Actually the people did it to themselves.

In the Beginning…

In the beginning, God set up a universe with genuinely free creatures, which can truly impact their surroundings—for good or for evil. The reason God did this is because if God wanted real relationship with His creatures, ones He could love and who could love Him in return, there was no other way to do it. Relational love, if it is to be real love, must be free love. Love that is forced is not love; but something closer to psychological rape. Real love cannot force itself on others; nor can it force others to love in return.

Since God wanted true and genuine love with us, He gave us true and genuine freedom. God knew the risks of such a gift. In fact, based on His divine foreknowledge and His experience with the rebellion of the angels, God knew that His gift of freedom to humanity would result in our rebellion as well. He knows the end from the beginning. And it did. But when Adam and Eve sinned, God did not step in to stop them. To do so would have been to deny their genuine freedom. Freedom isn’t freedom if God stepped in to stop things when freedom is used in wrong ways.

It was the same in the pre-flood world.

Who Brought the Flood?
God says He did it

Genesis 6:17

“And, behold, I, even I, am bringing a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the earth shall die.” In actuality everything did not die, the fish and marine life survived.

God continued, saying that He would save Noah and his family, a group of only eight people, and some of each type of animal or fowl living on the earth.

We have seen in our previous examples that when God says He did it, it actually was done by the people, themselves.

So how could the people bring the flood on themselves?

Before the flood, people lived a very long time, the average life span was 800 or 900 years. Noah was 600 years old when the flood came (Gen 7:6). Methuselah was 969 years old when he died, and he died the year the flood came. In fact, his name, Methuselah, means “when he dies it will be sent.” His name, for 969 years, prophesied of the coming flood.

With such extended life spans, and with vastly more intelligent minds that had not been subjected to 6000 years of genetic damage from sin, those who lived before the flood would obviously be much smarter than the best minds of today. In addition, each individual had many hundreds of years of life over which to acquire knowledge.

Now look at our current situation, the world and the earth are heading for disaster, just as it is prophesied in Revelation. But WE ARE GOING TO DO IT TO OURSELVES!

Just as those brilliant, ungodly, evil, genius minds brought the flood on themselves by, most probably, the same mechanism that is occurring today: weather modification with scalar waves that reached down to great depths and disrupted the massive areas of water within the earth and reached high into the atmosphere to disrupt the water canopy that surrounded the earth, chem trails from jets, etc. Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and volcano eruptions can now be brought about in any area in the world where the New World Order wishes to cause death, devastation and economic destruction.

And everyone will blame it on God – – – An “Act of God!” NOT

In Romans we see that “the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. (Romans 8:21-22)

The truth is sin, corruptness, and violence caused the whole earth to be set off course.

There is no darkness in God.

(Jas 1:17) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness nor shadow of turning. (darkness)

We will teach in detail, “Is God a Killer,” throughout this teaching. Here is a link if you would like the first part of this study. Or email me and I will send you the entire teaching.

Gen.6:18 “But I will establish My covenant (covenant of salvation for family) with you; and you shall go into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

Genesis 6:18, KJV But with THEE (Noah) will I establish My COVENANT (first mention); and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

NOTE: The HEBREW word for “COVENANT” is Berith-ber-eeth’ and it means, “TO CUT” (compare baw-raw’ – to create; shape, form, fashion, CUT DOWN or CUT OUT); a compact (made by passing between pieces of cut flesh); alliance, confederacy, treaty, or league; an agreement or a pledge.” Ber-eeth’ is most probably derived from an Akkadian root meaning, “to fetter.”

Noahic Covenant

The Noahic Covenant was the first covenantal administration after God’s initial covenant promise to redeem and restore humanity (Adamic Covenant)(Gen. 3:15). It is also the first time that the word בְּרִית (Berith) is used in the canon.

The Redemptive Role of Noah as a Type of Christ: Noah was a type of Christ. He was a typical second Adam, a typical redeemer, and a typical rest giver. Noah was given very similar instructions as Adam with regard to being fruitful and multiplying, filling the earth and subduing it. He was not the second Adam, but was a type of the second Adam. Jesus is the second and last (eschatological) Adam who redeems His people and fulfills the creation mandates. Noah was a typical redeemer. Everyone with Noah on the Ark was saved. Everyone in Christ is saved. Noah was not “the Redeemer.” He was a typical redeemer, providing typical redemption for all those who descended from him. Jesus came to redeem all those He represented spiritually. Noah was a typical rest giver, his name meaning rest.
The Redemptive Foreshadowing of the New Creation: The book of Revelation tells us that the “new heavens and the new earth”, the new Temple (us) where God dwells fully and permanently . Noah and all of creation were together in the Ark, as in a typical temple. This was foreshadowing the new creation-temple. Interestingly, the Ark and Solomon’s Temple had three levels. It seems that the biblical data substantiates that the Ark was a Temple where God dwelt with His creation. We are the three level temple, spirit, soul and body.
The Redemptive Purpose of Animals: Noah was commanded to take seven clean and two unclean of every animal into the Ark. The clean/unclean distinction was relevant in redemptive history for several reasons. First, it would be used in Israel’s sacrificial system. Because Jesus is likened to “a Lamb without blemish and without spot,” Israel would be commanded in the OT to offer spotless (clean) lambs to God. All of Israel’s sacrifices were to be clean. The cleanness was symbolic of the sinlessness of Jesus. When he stepped off of the Ark, the very first thing that Noah did was offer a sacrifice to God. The sacrificial system stretched back to Adam and Eve and was carried forward in redemptive history until Christ was sacrificed.

Covenant of the Salvation of Family

The Whole House Entering the Ark

Genesis 7:1 says, “And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thous and all thy house into the ark,” (KJ) and 1 Peter 3:20 says, “A few, that is, eight souls, were brought safely through by water.”

The ark was not for an individual; it was for the whole house. In Genesis 6 we see a man who was righteous because of his faith and obedience before God — Noah. The Bible does not say that the sons and daughters-in-law of Noah were righteous. The Bible only says that Noah was a righteous man before God. However, when God prepared a way of salvation for Noah, He commanded Noah’s whole house to enter the ark. Therefore, the household, not an individual, entered the ark.

A believer is assured that every member of his household has been bought into the ark. You can say to the Lord, “I have believed in You. You have said that my whole household has been brought into the ark. Lord, I thank You that you have brought my whole household into the ark. “

In Exodus the Passover Lamb was for the whole household. Ex. 12

Peter preached to Cornelius’s house and the whole household was saved. Acts 10

What I say is, “My family is saved to the uttermost!”

(Heb 7:25) Therefore He is able also to save to the uttermost those who come unto God by Him, since He ever lives to make intercession for them.

Now back to Noah

Gen.6:19 “And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 “Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.21 “And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, and you shall gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and for them.”

More Facts on Noah’s Ark
The Cargo

The Human Passengers. II Pet. 2:5 says 8 souls were saved. We assume this means Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives.

The Animal Passengers. In Gen. 6:19ff. Noah is instructed to bring mated pairs of every kind of bird, every kind of animal, and every kind of creature that moves along the ground. In Gen. 7:2ff. He is more specifically instructed to bring seven mated pairs (14) of clean animals and seven pairs of all birds.

The Number of animals. Only air-breathing animals needed to be included on the Ark. Authorities on taxonomy estimate that there are less than 18,000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians living in the world today. We might double this to allow for extinct species. This would gives us 36,000 species times 2, or 72,000 animals.

Adding for the clean animals, we might say there were as many as 75,000 animals. Earlier we said there was room enough in the Ark for 125,000 sheep, but most animals are smaller than a common house cat. There appears to be plenty of space for the preservation of the animal life. However, some creationists believe there may have been far fewer animals if Noah only took on board pairs of “kinds” as the word is used in Genesis

God created these “kinds” with potential for rich genetic diversity. For instance, at the time of Christ there existed only two types of dogs. All the diversity we see in the modern breeds of dogs came from these two!

The Care of the animals. Noah was instructed to include food for the animals (Gen. 6:21). How Noah and his small family could have cared for this large menagerie is unknown, not to mention the sanitation problem! What we must remember is that this event, i.e., the Flood, had supernatural elements. For instance, the animals came to the Ark against their natural instincts (Gen. 6:20). It is therefore reasonable to assume, as some creationists do, that the animals’ metabolism may have been slowed down during their confinement, even to the point where some of the animals may have gone into a state of hibernation.

Gen. 6:22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.

Summary:

God gave Noah instructions in the use of the ark.

1.He first reveals that His method of destruction will be by a flood.

2.He makes a “covenant” with Noah to save him and his family.

To save the animals, creeping things, and birds, Noah is to bring them into the Ark, along with food for them.
It is not known how many species and breeds were in existence in the days of Noah, but many breeds of each species have been developed since that time.
It is enough to say that the Ark was capable of transporting all the animals and birds that God intended to save, in order to “replenish” the earth.

Noah obeyed every specific command of God.

This commendation is given again in 7:5.
Noah’s faith and obedience are praised in the New Testament.

Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”

Genesis Chapter 7

Gen.7:1 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.

Noah believed God and it was accounted unto him as righteousness, just like future Abraham.

SALVATION OF HOUSEHOLD

As we said in previous lesson, we are assured of the salvation of our household.

Exodus 12:33 “Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth day of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household.

Acts 16:31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

TYPES/ SYMBOLS NOAH’S ARK AND THE GREAT FLOOD

Salvation, security and preservation in Christ

KEY SCRIPTURES: Gen. 6:14-17; Matt. 24:37-41; Heb. 11:7; 1 Pet.
3:20-21.

Noah’s Ark was a vessel built by Noah to save him, his family, and the animals from the Flood. “Ark” is from the Hebrew “tebah” (Strong’s #8392) which means “box.” The Ark was constructed of gopherwood or cypress, noted for its lightness and durability (used extensively in shipbuilding by the Phoenicians). Noah’s Ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high–about 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. The Ark was constructed with three “decks,” or stories. When the time came for the Flood God Himself shut its door. The waters subsided after the Flood, and the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Type and Shadow of Jesus Christ: Jesus spoke of the Flood and Noah’s Ark, comparing the days of Noah with the time of the coming of the Son of Man (Matt. 24:37-41; Luke 17:26-27). Noah’s Ark is a striking illustration of Jesus Christ, who preserves His house and family from the flood (Heb. 11:7). The “gopher wood” typifies His humanity (Heb. 2:14-18). The Ark was sealed inside and out with “pitch” (Gen. 6:14)–“kaphar” (the Hebrew word for “atonement”) which means “to cover.” The Ark had only one “door” and one “window” for light (Gen. 6:16)–Jesus Christ is the “Door of the sheep” and the “Light of the world” (Jn. 8:12; 10:7-9). The dimensions of Noah’s boat are most significant:

1. Noah’s Ark was 300 cubits long, the Bible number which denotes complete deliverance (see Gen. 5:22; Judg. 7:7-22; 1 Kg. 10:17; Mk. 14:3-6).SALVATION

2. Noah’s Ark was 50 cubits wide, the Bible number signifying anointing, Pentecost, or Jubilee (Lev. 25; Acts 2:1-4).FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

3. Noah’s Ark was 30 cubits high, the Bible number for priestly authority and maturity (see Gen. 41:46; 2 Sam. 5:4; 1 Kg. 6:2; Lk. 3:23; Eph. 4:13).MATURITY

These numbers reveal Jesus Christ in full authority and priestly stature, anointed to be the deliverance of God in the earth (Lk. 4:14-19; Acts 10:38). The multi-leveled decks of Noah’s Ark reveal Jesus Christ in three realms (paralleling the Outer Court, Holy Place, and Most Holy Place of Moses’ Tabernacle, as well as the Feasts of the Lord)–Jesus is Savior in Passover, Baptizer in Pentecost, and Lord in Tabernacles (Ex. 25:40; Deut. 16;16).

We are safe in Christ, protected and sealed by the blood of the Passover Lamb (Ex. 12:12-14; Rom. 8:34-39). The Flood bringing an end to Noah’s world is a figure of water baptism washing away our old life (Acts 2:38; 1 Pet. 3:20-21). Noah’s Ark had many “rooms” (Gen. 6:14), the Hebrew word for “nests, chambers, or dwellings”–in Him there is a place for each of us (Psa. 84:7; Jn. 14:2, 23; 1 Cor. 12:27). The length, breadth, and height of Noah’s Ark reveal a glorious Church in full authority and priestly stature, anointed to bring God’s deliverance to creation (Acts 1:1; 1 Jn. 4:17). There are three dimensions of our maturity in Christ–we are born again, Spirit-filled, then mature (Jn. 3:1-8; Acts 2:1-4; 1 Cor. 13:8-13).

The Typology or Spiritual meaning of the Ark Continued:

The Ark of Noah is a rich picture of the salvation provided by Christ who today is our Ark of safety.

Some of the points of comparison are:

God took the initiative in sparing Noah and his family. “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners Christ died for us.” Rom. 5:8.
There was a divine and human side to the Ark as Christ is both human and divine.
There was only one door to enter into the Ark as there is only one way to God and that is through Christ Jesus. “I am the gate for the sheep…” Jn. 10:7. See also Acts 4:12.
There was great security for the passengers of the Ark. Likewise, if we are in Christ we are secure. See Rom.8:31ff.

The ‘ark’ serves as a type of Christ, and only that which was WITHIN THE ARK survived God’s judgment upon carnality. And so it is for us, as the only things in our lives that survive God’s judgment upon carnality are those attributes of the character of Christ, or that which is IN Christ. So it is within the context of Father providing a new beginning, bringing forth a new creation that we read, “And the ark RESTED in the seventh month, on the SEVENTEENTH day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.” (Genesis 8:4) The timing of the ark finding its’ resting place is significant- the seventeenth day of the seventh month. Now then, years later the Feast of Tabernacles would begin on the FIFTEENTH day of the seventh month; “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the Lord.” (Leviticus 23:34) So the ark RESTED on the THIRD DAY of what would become the Feast of Tabernacles! Is this a spiritual picture for us or what?! Remember that Father is outside and beyond the confines of our time and space continuum. He sees the end from the beginning. He planned the Feast of Tabernacles long before the flood ever happened, and He planned that the ark would REST on the THIRD DAY of the Feast of Tabernacles! I believe that this is a picture of the very time we are living in now, as Father is bringing forth a new creation in the earth in this prophetic millennial THIRD DAY; “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that ONE DAY is with the Lord as a THOUSAND YEARS, and a thousand years as one day.” (2 Peter 3:8), “After two days will He revive us: in the THIRD DAY He will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight.” (Hosea 6:2)

Prophetically the ARK is RESTING on the THIRD DAY of the Feast of Tabernacles! And on what mountain is the ark resting?… “upon the mountains of Ararat.” Now get this, the Hebrew word Ararat means, “the CURSE REVERSED.” Did you catch that?… the CURSE REVERSED!

Father is providing a new beginning, so that all who are truly IN Christ (the ARK), are RESTING in the Finished Work on the THIRD DAY of the Feast of Tabernacles.

Gen.7:2 “You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female(bullocks, goats, lambs, turtle doves, needed for Levitical sacrifice); two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female;3 “also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth.4 “For after seven more days I will cause (allow)it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy (allow destruction) from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.”

Seven is the number of Sabbath, rest. Of course, all living things that God had made were not completely destroyed.

Forty signifies redemption: giving of the law, the temptation of Jesus.

Gen.7:5 And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him

Summary Gen. 7:1-5

Final preparations for entering the Ark.

Noah was commanded to take with him “every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female.”

Some animals were already domesticated. (See 4:2.)
According to the language in the text, God had apparently given Noah the formula for distinguishing between clean and unclean animals.
The Law of Moses confirmed this formula. Deuteronomy 14:4-6 “These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, [5] the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. [6] And any animal that divides the hoof and has the hoof split in two and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat.”
Was Noah told to take seven clean animals, or seven pairs?
Some may presume that seven is one of the special numbers of Jewish tradition, and conclude that it was seven animals, but this would leave the odd animal without a mate.
The text says, “…by sevens, a male and his female,” indicating seven pairs. (The special number “seven” would still apply.)
These extra animals could provide food for Noah and his family, and be available at the end of the flood for offering sacrifice to God. (See 8:20.)

A pause of seven days would proceed the beginning of the rain, which would last for 40 days and nights.

Gen. 7:6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth.

Gen.7:7 So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood.8 Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth,9 two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah.10 And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth.11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven (water canopy surrounding earth)were opened.

Fountains of the Deep

(Prov. 8:28) when He set the clouds above; when He made the strong fountains of the deep;

For years, science and the Bible have seemed at odds over the source of the Earth’s water. In Genesis 1, the Bible explains that God created Earth as a water-covered sphere, and in Genesis 7 the author explains that “springs of the great deep burst forth” and flooded the Earth.

However, scientists have debated for years over where the planet’s abundance of water originated. Some have believed that the Earth’s water must have come from external sources such as asteroids.

A new study published in the journal “Nature” appears to support the Bible’s account. Christian News reports that the research suggests that water actually originated deep inside the Earth. A summary of the study notes “it is not clear just how much water resides within the solid Earth and where it is to be found.”

CBN News’ Heather Sells spoke with Regent University’s Dr. Robert S. Stewart, a microbiologist and chair of the Science, Technology and Mathematics Department about the findings and what they mean for understanding the truth of the Bible’s creation account.

This scientific report has confirmed the Bible’s account of where water on the Earth came from.

The Bible describes how, after God created the Earth, “springs came up from the ground and watered all the land (Genesis 2:6). In the account of the Flood, the Bible also mentions how “the fountains of the great deep burst forth” (Genesis 7:11).

According to Christian Today, the new nine-page scientific study confirms the Bible’s account that water came from within the Earth.

“The ultimate origin of water in the Earth’s hydrosphere is in the deep Earth—the mantle,” the scientists wrote in their report, as quoted by Christian News.

The researchers came to this conclusion by studying diamonds discovered in Brazil which are believed to have come from deep within the Earth–in the mantle–the layer between the Earth’s surface and its innermost core.

“The presence of hydrous ringwoodite in a diamond from transition-zone depths supports the view that high fluid activity, notably that of water, has a key role in the genesis of ultradeep diamonds,” the report explained.

The study also discovered that there is a “major repository for water” located within the mantle, about 250 to 410 miles below the Earth’s surface.

Scientists also agree that the earth was knocked off its axis several times even before The Great Flood.

AT LEAST SEVERAL GREAT CATACLYSMS HAVE STRUCK THE EARTH SINCE ITS FORMATION. THE EARTH AT SOME TIME IN THE PAST HAS ACTUALLY BEEN FLIPPED OVER ON ITS AXIS AT LEAST 1/4 OF A TURN, POSSIBLY A FULL TURN. WE FIND THE EVIDENCE OF THIS TODAY IN THE POLAR REGIONS WHERE PREHISTORIC ANIMALS, MAMMOTHS HAVE BEEN FOUND ENCASED IN ICE WITH FOOD STILL IN THEIR MOUTHS AND STOMACH. WHEN THE EARTH WAS FLIPPED THE SINGLE SQUARE LAND MASS (PANGAEA) WAS BROKEN APART BY THE INERTIA AND GRAVITATIONAL FORCES INTO CONTINENTS. AREAS THAT WERE BEFORE WARM AND TROPICAL WERE NOW LOCATED IN THE POLAR REGIONS, AND VICE VERSA. THE LAND MASSES OF THE EARTH HAVE BEEN MOVED OUT OF THEIR ORIGINAL PLACES. THIS WAS THE FIRST CATACLYSM. THE SECOND WAS THE GREAT FLOOD IN WHICH SEPARATED THE CONTINENTS, WHEN THE FOUNTAINS OF THE GREAT DEEP WHERE BROKEN UP.

This is the Pangea theory: This could be what the earth looked like at that time.

EVIDENCE FOR NOAH’S ARK?

Dramatic new evidence supports the Bible’s account of Noah’s Flood. Deep-sea explorers have discovered a coastline on the floor of the Black Sea, providing evidence of a sudden catastrophic flood about 7,500 years ago that spread almost
overnight over thousands of square miles of land. Explorers led by Robert Ballard and funded by the National Geographic Society captured the first sonar images of a coastline 550 feet below the surface of the sea. It had been submerged undisturbed for thousands of years, according to radiocarbon dating that placed the remains of freshwater mollusks dredged from the beach at 7,500 years, and saltwater species at 6,900 years.

The Washington Post said. Ballard said the findings indicate the flood occurred during that 600-year gap. Analysis of Ballard’s evidence was done by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. The discovery offers independent verification to an idea advanced by geologists William Ryan and Walter Pitman of Columbia University. They have theorized that the Black Sea, between Ukraine and Turkey, formed when melting glaciers raised the sea level until it broke through a natural dam at what is now the Bosporus strait, which separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Black Sea. That created a deluge that quickly submerged massive amounts of land overnight, probably killing thousands of people and billions of animals, the geologists say. Ballard’s discovery backs up the theory, which is based on 30 years of research. Ballard found the ancient coastline this summer, almost exactly where Ryan and Pitman said they would. Biblical scholars date the writing of the Book of Genesis, which includes the story of Noah, between 2,900 and 2,400 years ago. A similar event is described in the Mesopotamian Gilgamesh legend, written about 3,600 years ago. Ryan and Pitman dated the flood at 7,600 years ago, and their theory argues that the flood was horrible enough for writers and minstrels to remember it for thousands of years.

Many creationist geologists have proposed that the Grand Canyon (GC) was formed by a catastrophic dam-breach event. This would have released large quantities of water from impounded lakes east of the canyon that had remained on the plateau after the Flood. This event would have carved the GC, starting from the east moving to the west. A better explanation is that the GC was formed while the waters of Noah’s Flood receded from the American continent. As this receding water flowed from east to west, the GC was mainly carved out in the opposite direction, from west to east. This scenario explains many characteristic and unusual features of the GC, such as its location through the top of a ridge, its branching structure, its numerous major and minor side canyons, its meandering and the presence of multiple ‘outflow points’ in its terminal escarpment.

Again, The Earth used to be originally one large landmass (Genesis 1:9; 10:25, Deuteronomy 32:8)

This agrees exactly with what the Bible says occurred during the global Flood. The continents were created as one large land mass (Genesis 1:9-10). Many geologists agree there is strong evidence that the earth was originally one super continent – just as the Bible said in Genesis.

Continental drift inferred (Genesis 7:11). Today the study of the ocean floor indicates that the landmasses have been ripped apart. Scripture states that during the global Flood the “fountains of the great deep were broken up.” This cataclysmic event apparently resulted in the continental plates breaking and shifting.

Vast fossil deposits anticipated (Genesis 7). When plants and animals die they decompose rapidly. Yet billions of life forms around the globe have been preserved as fossils. Geologists now know that fossils only form if there is rapid deposition of life buried away from scavengers and bacteria. This agrees exactly with what the Bible says occurred during the global Flood.

They show you the Great Flood line when doing a deep Grand Canyon exploration.

Summary Gen. 7:6-12

Moses records some specific facts about the beginning of the Flood.

A.The age of Noah at the beginning of the Flood was 600 years.

More specifically, Noah was 600 years, 2 months, and 17 days old when it began to rain.
He was said to be 500 years old, when he is first mentioned in verse 5:32. 3. God had determined a one hundred twenty year span of time for mankind, (verse 6:3).
During this time, Noah could preach, and build the Ark.
We have no information on how long it took to build the Ark.
Noah and his family were in the Ark 7 days before the rain began.

On day the rain began, God allowed to be opened the “fountains of the great deep.”
The Men of Moses’ time would not have had the means to discover these deep fountains in the sea.
Modern explorers, with highly developed submersibles, have found these fountains, or vents of warm fresh water in the depth of the oceans.

The rain which lasted for 40 days and nights must have been torrential.

Gen. 7:13 On the very same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark—14 they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort.15 And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life.16 So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in.

Jesus is the door: Security of the believer; the ark typifies the secret place of the Most High. Ps. 91

TYPIFYING THE FORESHADOWING OF THE REDEMPTION OF MANKIND BY JESUS CHRIST

Gen.7:17 Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth.18 The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters.19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered.20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered.

Summary Gen. 7:13-20

Moses, most likely the author of Genesis, gives a very graphic and accurate description of the progress of the flood.

1.He says, “The water increased and LIFTED UP the ark.”

Moses’ knowledge of boats would be from observing them on the Nile River, and possibly the “lifting” of boats by rising water.

Moses is definite in his measurement of 15 cubits higher than the mountains.

He was not a witness of this, so it had to be revealed to him by God.
Some scientists say that the total volume of water on the earth is sufficient to cover all the mountains, if the polar ice caps are melted.

Gen. 7:21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man.22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died.23 So He (allowed) destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive.24 And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.

Parallel in Matthew 7:24-27 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:25 “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:27 “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

Summary Gen. 7:21-24

The tragic end of all those who perished in the Flood could have been avoided.

Noah is the example to them of the kind of person who can be saved.
He had complete trust in the Word of God.
He was obedient to God’s every command.
Noah’s salvation, with his family, is also the pattern for those under the New Testament. 1 Peter 3:18-21 “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; [19] in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, [20] who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. [21] And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you– not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience– through the resurrection of Jesus Christ…”
The destruction in Noah’s time is confirmed in the New Testament by a revelation from Jesus Christ. Luke 17:26-27 “And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it shall be also in the days of the Son of Man: [27] they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.”
This passage also reveals the period in which the Flood was at its full height – 150 days.

Genesis Chapter 8

Gen.8:1 Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided.2 The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained.3 And the waters receded continually from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters decreased.4 Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month. In the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen.

Types and Shadows of Jesus Christ- Yeshua Ha Messiah

Noah’s Ark and the flood, only 8 (new beginnings) were saved rising above the water, and Water Baptism, symbolic, all potentially saved , 1Pet 3:20-21. (Water baptism as a sign of salvation)
Summary Gen. 8:1-5

The Flood recedes.

God reverses the causes of the Flood, and the waters gradually recede.
Verse 4 says that the Ark “rested upon the mountains of Ararat” in the 7th month, on the 17th day of the month.
This would be 5 months after Noah entered the Ark.
The tops of the (surrounding?) Mountains became visible on the 1st day of the 10th month (or, nearly 70 days after the Ark grounded).
Gen. 8:6 So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made.7 Then he sent out a raven, (signifying natural man)which kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth.8 He also sent out from himself a dove, ( regenerated man, also type of Holy Spirit ) to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground.9 But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her, and drew her into the ark to himself.10 And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent the dove out from the ark.11 Then the dove came to him in the evening, and behold, a freshly plucked olive leaf was in her mouth; and Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth.12 So he waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, which did not return again to him anymore.

THE SENDING FORTH OF THE DOVE 3 TIMES AS A TYPE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT’S MINISTRY DURING 3 DISPENSATIONS:

DISPENSATION OF THE FATHER: THE DOVE GOES FORTH DURING THIS DISPENSATION ONLY TO FIND THE EARTH UNDER JUDGEMENT, AND SO RETURNS TO THE FATHER
DISPENSATION OF THE SON: THE HOLY SPIRIT GOES FORTH AND LIGHTS UPON CHRIST AT THE RIVER JORDAN.

Matthew 3:16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.

DISPENSATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT :The dove is sent forth, but does not return, for in this dispensation the Holy Spirit goes forth to rest in the believer and to abide with him forever.
John 14:16 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

Summary Gen. 8:6-12

Noah and family remained in the Ark until he could obtain proof that the water of the Flood had receded enough.

The first two birds he sent out brought no helpful evidence.
The final flight of the dove produced the evidence Noah wanted – a “freshly picked olive leaf.”
Skeptics question this information, contending that an olive tree could not have survived the Flood.
Gen.8:13 And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, that the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and indeed the surface of the ground was dry.14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dried.

How did various animals get from the Ark to isolated places, such as Australia? If there was only one continent at that time, then questions of getting animals from remote regions to the ark are not relevant.
Dinosaurs – Did Noah take them on the Ark too? Dinosaurs were not present, probably in the World That Was.
The water — Where did it come from? And where did it all go after the Flood? The fountains of the deep (subterranean waters) were broken up and from the windows of heaven (canopy around the earth)
How long did it rain? 40 days and 40 nights
How many people survived the Flood catastrophe? 8 Noah and his family
How long were they on the ark? Actually it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. They entered in the second month. In the seventh month on the seventeenth day of the month the ark rested. In the tenth month they could see the tops of the trees. So Just short of a year they were on the ark. They left in the second month on the seven and twentieth day of the month. (Gen 8:4-5 7:11 8:13-14)
Do we know when the flood started? Well sort of. We know that Noah was 600 years old. And they went into the ark in the second month and the 17th day. Genesis 7:11
How many sons did Noah have? 3 Named SHEM, HAM, AND JAPHETH
Were they married? Yes Noah and his son were all married

Origin of races — How could all human races come from Noah, his three sons and their wives? The Bible tells us how the population that descended from Noah’s family had one language and by living in one place were disobeying God’s command to “fill the earth” (Genesis 9:1, 11:4). The angels confused their language, causing a break-up of the population into smaller groups which scattered over the earth (Genesis 11:8-9). Modern genetics show how, following such a break-up of a population, variations in skin color, for example, can develop in only a few generations. There is good evidence that the various people groups we have today have not been separated for huge periods of time.
So where are all the fossils of pre-Flood people? Most were destroyed, the few remaining were probably in the World That Was.
How did the FISH survive? We do not know how salty the sea was before the flood. The flood was initiated by the breaking up of the “fountains of the great deep” (Genesis 7:11) The flood must have been associated with massive earth movements, because of the weight of the water alone, which would have resulted in great volcanic activity. So, many fish species today have the capacity to adapt to both fresh and salt water within their own lifetimes.
How did the LAND PLANTS survive? Many terrestrial seeds can survive long periods of soaking in various concentrations of salt water. Indeed, salt water impedes the germination of some species so that the seed lasts better in salt water than fresh water. Other plants could have survived in floating vegetation masses, or on pumice from the volcanic activity. Pieces of many plants are still capable of asexual sprouting. Many plants could have survived as planned food stores on the ark, or accidental inclusions in such food stores (Genesis 6:21).Many seeds have devices for attaching themselves to animals, and some could have survived the flood by this means. Others could have survived in the stomachs of the bloated, floating carcasses of dead herbivores. The olive leaf brought back to Noah by the dove (Genesis 8:11) shows that plants were regenerating well before Noah and company left the ark.
What does the RAINBOW mean? God put a rainbow in the sky as a covenant and promise to remind His people that He would never destroy all mankind by water again. Genesis 8:13-17
How many days were between the times that Noah sent the dove to find land? Noah sent out the Dove out in intervals of 7 days. Gen 8:10
How long did it take for the water to recede? They entered the ark on the second month and ark rested on the seventh month. The waters decreased continually until the tenth month. The earth was completely dry by the second month of the next year. SO you would just take 40 days from the total time on the ark and then an additional 7 days because it waited 7 days to rain. (Gen 8:4-5 7:11 8:13-14)
Where did the ark come to rest? The Ararat mountain range of Armenia. “And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.” Genesis 8:4
How old was Noah when he went on the ark? 600 years old
How long were they in the ark before it started to rain? Noah and his family were in the ark for 7 days before it started to rain. Genesis 7:4
What does Ararat mean? The Hitchcocks Bible Names Dictionary says that it means “Curse of trembling”. The Hebrew Lexicon says this: Ararat = “the curse reversed: precipitation of curse” 1) a mountainous region of eastern Armenia, between the river Araxes and the lakes Van and Oroomiah, the site where Noah’s ark came to rest on 2 peaks) (TWOT) the mountain where Noah’s ark came to rest
NUMBERS are very important in the Bible.
It rained 40 days & 40 nights…..What other Biblical events lasted for that amount of time? 40 meaning testing, trial, probation
Noah had 3 sons…… 3 is the number of completeness, Divine testimony and manifestation
8 people went on the ark….. 8 is the number of new beginnings
Noah was in the ark for 7 days before the rain started….What was created in 7 days? 7 is a perfect number; the number of spiritual perfection.
Has anyone really seen Noah’s Ark? Reports over the past century range from visits to the vessel, to recovery of wooden timber, to aerial photographs. It is generally believed that at least large part of the Ark is intact, not on the highest peak, but somewhere above the 10,000 foot level. Apparently encased in snow and ice for most of the year, only during certain warm summers can the structure be witnessed or accessed. Some have spoken of climbing onto the roof, others say they have walked inside. Turkish reports from a nearby village say that at one time excursions up Mt. Ararat happened daily. Some even report of bringing pieces of the ark down with them. In the 1980s, “ark-eology” was given an air of respectability with the active participation of former NASA astronaut James Irwin in expeditions up the mountain. In addition, Ark investigation was also given a boost with the breakup of the former Soviet Union, because the mountain was right on the Turkey-Soviet border. Expeditions up the mountain had been considered a security threat by the Soviet government. Unfortunately, return visits to proposed sites have produced no further evidence, the whereabouts of all photographs are presently unknown, and different sightings do not suggest the same location on the mountain. Furthermore, Astronaut James Irwin has since died, a purported eyewitness has recently recanted publicly, and there have been few new expeditions up the mountain in the 1990s. Further expeditions have taken place in the new millennium, but no proof of the Ark has yet been found. But efforts are still ongoing.

Noah’s Ark nestled on Mount Ararat Source : The Peninsula / BY SATISH KANADY Dogubayazit (Turkey’s Iran-Armenian Border)

For the first time in the seven decade-long history of the search for the legendary Noah’s Ark, a Turkish-Hong Kong exploration team on Tuesday came out with “material evidence”, to prove that the Ark was nestled on Mount Ararat, Turkey’s highest mountain peak bordering Iran and Armenia. A panel of experts, comprising Turkish authorities, veteran mountaineers, archaeologists, geologists and members of Hong Kong-based Noah’s Ark Ministries International, also displayed an almost one-metre-long peice of petrified wood before the media and specially invited international experts. The experts claimed it to be a part of a long structure they had unearthed during their February-August 2007 exploration. “It is for the first time in the history of the Ark search that an exploration team is getting a material evidence and graphic documentation. This makes it not only a the significant breakthrough in the Ark-search, but one that is supported with the most substantial evidence in recent history,” the panel said.

The revelation is expected to open up a fresh chapter in the ongoing debates in the scientific community on the search for Noah’s Ark. Narrating the genesis of their exploration on Mount Ararat, the mount which has a direct reference in Holy Quran (Mount Judi) and Bible, the panel said the search team had made several foiled attempts before unearthing the evidence at an altitude of 4,500-metres of the estimated 5,165 metre volcanic mountain. “The structure was discovered in the interiors of an unusual cave. The 11.5m wide and 2.6m high white wooden texture was revealed after removing thick layers of volcanic ash on the cave wall,” panel members said at a press conference. One of the underlying issues in the search for the Ark is the proper identification of its wood fragments. A petrographic examination carried out by the Applied Geoscience Centre of the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Hong Kong, identified the object as a petrified wooden structure, the panel said. “Some of the big holes found on the structure indicate the locations where branches used to grow on tree. In places, original holes are partly or completely replaced by individual minerals and crystalline materials that can be found in rock materials,” said Dr Ahmet Ozbek, a panel member, who is also a faculty of Geology Engineering Kahramanmara Suctcu Imam University. Dismissing the possibilities of the structure being wood that could appear naturally around the discovery site, Professor Oktay Belli, director, Eurasian Archaeology Institute, University of Istanbul, said researches have proved that there was no vegetation on Mount Ararat ever since 2000BC, because of the asperities of Ararat’s climate. Talking to The Peninsula, Cemalettin Demircioglu, Dogubayazit City Governor, under whose jurisdiction the mount is located, said the civic body will invite more international experts to conduct further scientific studies on Mount Ararat. “History has more than one times corroborated the legendary evidence that the ark was nestled on Mount Ararat. We will introduce the latest findings to the world and continue the scientific study. All interested scientists and NGOs can join our missions” he said. However, he said, those who are involved in the project must ensure the findings are not used politically, religiously, or for any vested interest. Located in the Far Eastern Turkey, Ararat is great prize for mountain collectors. Ark sighting has often been reported from this mountain. The observation of Vessel-shaped features in aerial photograph of Ararat had caused a stir in the late 1950’s. However, this is the first time an exploration team is coming out with “material evidence”.

Many have seen the recent movie “Noah’, myself included. I knew it was not a Biblical film.

Here are some of the many errors in the film.

Noah wasn’t distant from God.In Aronofsky’s film, Noah (played by Russell Crowe) is a tortured soul who senses through a dream that the mysterious “Creator” (He is never called God) plans to destroy the world with a flood. But in Genesis 6-8, much of the account involves direct communication from God to Noah (see 6:13; 7:1; 8:15). Noah was God’s close friend, and he understood Him.
Noah didn’t drink hallucinogenic tea to hear God’s directions. In the film, Noah visits his grandfather, Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins), who helps him understand that a global catastrophe is coming. Genesis 6 says God revealed this plan directly to Noah, yet in Aronofsky’s version, Methuselah serves Noah some dark tea (or was it coffee?) to help him hear the Creator’s voice. Nobody in the Bible—ever—had to take a drug or a potion to hear from God, and Noah certainly never visited a shaman.
Noah’s sons weren’t without wives on the ark.In Aronofsky’s fanciful version, only one of Noah’s sons, Shem, has a wife (played by Emma Watson)—and she ends up pregnant with twin girls who, we assume, will eventually become wives for Noah’s other two sons. Huh? In the Genesis account, God tells Noah: “You shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you” (Gen. 6:18).
There were no stowaways on the ark.Aronofsky adds preposterous drama to Noahby having the evil warlord Tubal-Cain (Ray Winstone) sneak on board the ark and hide in the shadows near sleeping bears and goats. He then attempts to kill Noah with the help of Noah’s son Ham—who is angry that his dad didn’t arrange to find him a wife before the rain started.
Noah didn’t get help from giant rock creatures when he built the ark. Aronofsky borrowed this weird concept from ancient Jewish mystics who suggested that the angels God cast out of heaven after creation were encased in rock and walked around helping human beings. In Noah, the giants, called “watchers,” chop down the wood for the massive ark and defend it from an invading army. All this made for some great digital effects, but the Bible says God cast these disobedient angels into hell (2 Pet. 2:4), not to earth, and they certainly weren’t sent here to help mankind.
Noah was not a deranged killer bent on stopping his family from reproducing. The second half of Noahwas the worst part. After the floodbegins, the man God uses to save all animals and humans from destruction decides God doesn’t want the human race to survive. He becomes a psychopath and threatens to kill his daughter-in-law’s child when she gives birth! The biblical Noah would never have tried to prevent repopulation. Noah understood he and his family had been commissioned to replenish the earth (Gen. 9:1).
The descendants of Adam did not treat the skin of a serpent as a family heirloom.Noahgets downright creepy whenever a character pulls out this snakeskin talisman. These scenes prove that Aronofsky based his film not so much on the biblical account of the flood but on gnostic writings. Centuries ago, some Jewish mystics taught that the God of Genesis was really a loser and that Satan was a better god. The subtle implication is that Noah needed Satan’s help, not God’s.
At the end of the flood story in Genesis, Noah gathers his family around the altar for worship, and they enter into a covenant with Him. But in the movie, just before the rainbow appears, Noah wraps the snakeskin around his arm and blesses his family with it. In a similar way, this film is wrapped in a serpent’s skin—and that’s why I will be more cautious next time when a Hollywood studio tries to get Christians to buy tickets to their “biblical” blockbuster.

Special Note about Noah and the Flood and perhaps a laugh or 2

All I Really Need to know I Learned from Noah’s Ark

Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.

Stay fit. When you’re 600 years old, someone might ask you to do something REALLY big.

Don’t listen to critics – do what has to be done.

Build on high ground.

For saftey’s sake, travel in pairs.

Two heads are better than one.

Speed isn’t always an advantage. The cheetahs were on board, but so were the snails.

If you can’t fight or flee – float!

Don’t forget that we are all in the same boat.

Remember that the ark was built by amateurs and the Titanic was built by professionals.

Remember that the woodpeckers INSIDE are often a bigger threat than the storm outside.

Don’t miss the boat.

No matter how bleak it looks, if God is with you, there’s always a rainbow on the other side.

Gen. 8:15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying,16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you.17 “Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you: birds and cattle and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, so that they may abound on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him.19 Every animal, every creeping thing, every bird, and whatever creeps on the earth, according to their families, went out of the ark.

Recap of Who Brought the Flood?
God says He did it

Genesis 6:17

“And, behold, I, even I, am bringing a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the earth shall die.”

God continued, saying that He would save Noah and his family, a group of only eight people, and some of each type of animal or fowl living on the earth. (2 unclean, 7 clean)

We have seen in our previous examples that when God says He did it, it actually was done by the people, themselves.

Think about the law of sowing and reaping. Remember, the fountains of the deep were broken up. The axis of the earth was going to tilt off course. Could God have seen this coming and warned Noah to build and ark?

Is the earth heading for disaster, just as it is prophesied in Revelation? BUT THE TRUTH IS, WE ARE GOING TO DO IT TO OURSELVES!

NOT; This is a contradiction.

Just as those brilliant, ungodly, evil, genius minds brought the flood on themselves by, most probably, the same mechanism that is occurring today: weather modification with scalar waves that reached down to great depths and disrupted the massive areas of water within the earth and reached high into the atmosphere to disrupt the water canopy that surrounded the earth.

The Flood, a Pun

Genesis 8:1
“But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.”

This verse troubles me.
1. Had he FORGOTTEN him? I mean, it’s NOT like he had so many people to keep up with that Noah “slipped through the cracks!!!”
2. Do you know how strong a “WIND” would have to be to recede water that covered EVERYTHING????”
3. Is He double-minded??? Genesis 6:6 says: “So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.” So…. he was sorry he made man so he pitched a tantrum and destroyed thousands and thousands of people and animals and plants, etc…. Everything was DROWNED by a God of anger. THOUSANDS of innocent animals. BABIES! NOT!!
4. He saves Noah, because he is “righteous.” Of course, on the party-boat, he runs out of alcohol so the first thing he does, when the boat lands, is to grow grapes, make wine, get drunk and has some kind of perversion with his son. Hmmmmmmm great choice of WHO to SAVE!

Sorry! Like a boat the length of three football fields, made without power tools, this story DOES NOT FLOAT! So…..what do we do? We get what TRUTH we CAN get out of it! We accept the WHEAT and we burn the CHAFF. We RIGHTLY divide it and GLEAN what Spirit allows us to glean. We “SAVE” the RIGHT parts of this story and we DROWN the rest!!!!!

Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and volcano eruptions can now be brought about in any area in the world because of the fall, it wishes to cause death, devastation and economic destruction.

And everyone will blame it on God – – – An “Act of God!”

Yet Scripture says the earth groans. It’s out of order and wants to be brought back in order.

(Rom 8:19-21) For the earnest expectation of the creation waits for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creation was not willingly subjected to vanity, but because of Him who subjected it on hope that the creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

God is not angry with us.

(Isa 54:9) For this is as the waters of Noah to Me; for as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn from being angry with you and from rebuking you.

Summary Gen. 8:15-19

Using the time frame in verse 14, Noah and his family spent a year, or 12 lunar months, plus 10 days in the Ark.

God commanded the survivors of the Flood to “breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth,” the same command (except have dominion) he had given to His creation in the beginning.

More Symbolism:

Review of the symbolism of the Flood Story

Noah’s Ark is a striking illustration of Jesus Christ

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

1.Noah preserves His house and family from the flood of divine judgment (Heb. 11:7). Jesus Christ preserves His house from judgment through redemption.

The “gopher wood” typifies His humanity (Heb. 2:14-18). Hebrews 2:14-18 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.16 For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham.17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.

The Ark was sealed inside and out with “pitch”(pitch, tar was a plentiful substance on the earth at that time) (Gen. 6:14)–“kaphar” (the Hebrew word for “atonement”) which means “to cover.”

The Ark had only one “door” and one “window” for light (Gen. 6:16)–Jesus Christ is the “Door of the sheep” and the “Light of the world” (Jn. 8:12; 10:7-9). The dimensions of Noah’s boat are most significant:

Noah’s Ark was 300 cubits long, the Bible number which denotes
complete deliverance (see Gen. 5:22; Judg. 7:7-22; 1 Kg. 10:17; Mk. 14:3-6).

Noah’s Ark was 50 cubits wide, the Bible number signifying
anointing, Pentecost, or Jubilee (Lev. 25; Acts 2:1-4).

Noah’s Ark was 30 cubits high, the Bible number for priestly
authority and maturity (see Gen. 41:46; 2 Sam. 5:4; 1 Kg. 6:2; Lk. 3:23; Eph.

4:13).

4:17). There are three dimensions of our maturity in Christ–we are born again, Spirit-filled,

then mature (Jn. 3:1-8; Acts 2:1-4; 1 Cor. 13:8-13).

Gen.8:20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.(place of sacrifice, used one of the 7 which is # of spiritual perfection, 3rd sacrifice mentioned so far)

BLOOD SACRIFICE, FORESHADOWING OF JESUS; NOAH’S OFFERING WAS A TYPE OF CHRIST.

Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice. The only sacrifice we are to make is ourselves, sacrifice of praise.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Gen.8:21 And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.

Related Scriptures:

Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

Gen.8:22 “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night shall not cease.”

Summary Gen. 8:20-22

Noah’s first inclination, after departing from the Ark, is to make an offering to God.

Noah offered the “clean” animals and birds he had taken with him in the Ark. B. God made a promise to Himself that he would “never allow the destruction every living thing.”

There will be a purging of the earth either by literal fire or symbolic fire, but not by a flood. 2 Peter 3:5b-7 “…by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, [6] through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. [7] But the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.”

2 Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.”

(Rev 21:1) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

Prophetically/symbolically:

The Lord already has a” new heaven and a new earth”.

Abandoning the temple on mount Moriah, he has filled that new temple: the temple not made with hands, US…… both the unseen parts (the Holy Place (spirit) within, where a man meets Him alone, one-on-one) that the Jews called the heavens, and the outer court where whosoever will come may come and see (that they called the earth)

And we dwell in this house not one day, as David hoped, but all of our days.

And here, both of us are one …. Me and Father, Son and Holy Spirit make decisions, exercising authority, declaring, decreeing upon the earth.

After the Flood of Noah, God ordained that there will be times and seasons while the earth remains.

PRINCIPLE OF THE SEED AND THE LAW OF RECIPROCITY/SEEDTIME AND HARVEST Matt. 17:20,Luke 6:31-38,2 Cor.9:6-10, Mark 4:3-20,Gal.6:7-9

Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

2 Cor 9:6-11 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written: “He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

Gal 6:7-9 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Heb 12:11-13 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

James 3:18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

The first thing Noah did after the Flood was to build an altar and make a sacrifice to the Lord. God was pleased with Noah and made promises to the human family through the faith of Noah. One of the promises given at this time was the Law of Seedtime and Harvest: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest … shall not cease.”

When God created the first living thing, He gave it the ability to grow and multiply. How? Through the principle of seed and harvest. Your life began by this principle, and since your birth your life has operated by this same principle. Harvest springs from the good or bad seeds you have sown, whether or not you were consciously aware of your seed-planting.

The principle continues today. To overcome life’s problems, reach your potential in life, see your life become fruitful, multiplied, replenished (that is, in health, finance, spiritual renewal, family—your entire being), determine to follow God’s law of seedtime and harvest.

Sow the seed of His promise in the soil of your need!

Gen. 8:22 Cont.’:

(Gen 8:22) While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.KJ

Gen.8:22 “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night shall not cease.”NKJ

The Law of First Mention:

The “law of first-mention” is the principle in the interpretation of Scripture which states that the first mention or occurrence of a subject in Scripture establishes an unchangeable pattern, with that subject remaining unchanged in the mind of God throughout Scripture.

Another example of The Law of First Meniton is when God changed Abram’s name to Abraham and made him the father of many nations.
God changed Sarai’s name to Sarah and made her the mother of nations.
God changed Jacob’s name to Israel and made him the first Israeli.
God changed the name of Simon to Peter and gave him primacy over the other apostles.

Whenever God changed the name, the person was given great honor.

The Earth Shall Remain Forever

Remaineth is a present perfect tense verb which is continual action (Greek “perfect tense”) as opposed to a one-time action (Greek “aorist tense”).

(Psa 119:90) Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.

Again abideth means continual action.

(Ecc 1:4) One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

(Exo 9:29) And Moses said to him, as soon as I go out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands to the Lord. The thunder shall stop, and the hail will not be any more, so that you may know that the earth is the Lord’s.

(Deu 10:14) Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord your God, the earth also, with all in it.

(Psa 24:1) A Psalm of David. The earth is Lord’s, and the fullness of it; the world, and those who dwell in it.

(Psa 115:16) The heavens, even the heavens, are Lord’s; but the earth He has given to the children of men.

Difference between Earth and World.

Scripture speaks of 3 worlds: (2 Pet. 3:6-7,13):

The world that then was. (2 Pet. 3:6)
The world kept in store until now. (2 Pet. 3:7)
The world wherein dwells righteousness. (2 Pet. 3:13)

The Greek word for “world” is kosmos (English “cosmetic”) and means “an order, system or arrangement of things.” The cosmos is a mindset, a mentality, a way of thinking with its consequent life style. The first world was Noah’s cosmos. God allowed the destruction of that order (not the earth) with water (2 Pet. 3:6). In spiritual realities, God consumed our old man, the world that then was, in the waters of baptism (1 Pet. 3:20-21). The second world exists from that time until now, reserved unto fire: His Word or Voice in the mouth of His prophets (Jer. 23:29; Heb. 12:29). The elements that melt with fervent heat are the beggarly elements, the rudimentary concepts and principles of man-made tradition (2 Pet. 3:7). The third world, the next world government, is the immovable Kingdom whose government and peace is marked by endless increase (Is. 9:7; 2 Pet. 3:13).

Gen.9:1So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.

NOTICE HE DID NOT SAY SUBDUE THE EARTH AS HE TOLD ADAM; DOMINION WAS LOST.(as I said before seemingly lost; the enemy assumed power he did not possess)

DOMINION AND AUTHORITY RESTORED BY JESUS.

Matthew 28:8 –20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority (ALL POWER OF RULE) has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “(YOU)Go therefore ( AND TAKE THIS AUTHORITY) and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20 “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Genesis Chapter 9

Gen.9:2 “And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand.3 “Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you all things, even as the green herbs.4 “But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

ANIMALS GIVEN AS MEAT

Gen.9:5 “Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man.

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

Gen. 9:6 “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man. 7 And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; Bring forth abundantly in the earth And multiply in it.”

Noahic Covenant-non-provisional, eternal, generational covenant

Summary Gen. 9 :1-7

Events after the Flood.

The commands by God to “multiply and fill the earth,” are repeated to mankind in the cleansed earth.
Gen.9:1So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.

B.Additional laws of God are given to Noah and his descendants.

They were not to eat meat that had not be drained of its blood.
God says, “I will require your lifeblood,” probably meaning that this would be the punishment for violating this command.
The Law of Moses also had this prohibition. Leviticus 17:10-11 “And any man from the house of Israel, or from the aliens who sojourn among them, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people. [11] For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the
blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.”

This basic law passed into the New Testament. Acts 15:28-29 “(In a letter to the Gentiles) For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials: [29] that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well.”

God established the rule of capital punishment for murder in verse 6.
This rule also appears in the Law of Moses. (1)Leviticus 24:17 “And if a man takes the life of any human being, he shall surely be put to death.” (2)Deuteronomy 17:6-7 “On the evidence of two witnesses or three witnesses, he who is to die shall be put to death; he shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness. [7] The hand of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.”
The New Testament amends this rule. (1)Christians are forbidden to avenge themselves. Romans 12:19 “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

The New Testament appoints the governing rulers as the executioners. Romans 13:3-4 “For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same; [4] for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil.”

There is much debate about capital punishment.

Gen. 9:8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying:9 “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you,10 “and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth.11 “Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”12 And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

SIGN OF THE COVENANT: A RAINBOW

LET IT BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN

Rainbow Around Throne

Revelation 4:3 And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.

Gen.9:13 “I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.14 “It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;

“And it shall come to pass, when I bring a CLOUD over the earth, that the BOW shall be SEEN IN THE CLOUD.” (Genesis 9:13-14) Prophetically bringing Your CLOUD of witnesses, Your CLOUD of glory, to overshadow the EARTH of the carnal earthen vessel! And we stand in agreement that the RAINBOW, Your RESURRECTION LIFE, be openly SEEN and visible IN THE CLOUD; we are His covenantal people!

Gen. 9:15 “and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.16 “The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

The “Noahic” Covenant. Gen. 8:20-9:17.

Man having proved himself a failure according to Dispensationalist, the Dispensation of Conscience ended. God allowed a Flood to destroy the race from off the earth, sparing only Noah and his family. After the Flood Noah offered a “sacrifice” which was well pleasing to God, and God made an unconditional Covenant with Noah. According to Dispensationalists this ushered in the “Dispensation of Human Government.” It contained the following provisions.

That God would not allow the destruction of all the living. And that the “day” and the “night” and the “seasons” should not cease.

That Noah and his descendants were to be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth.

That from that time they were not to be restricted to a “vegetable” diet, but could eat meat if they drained the blood from it. Later Levitical law

The law of “Capital Punishment” was established. This has never been abrogated, though the manner of enforcing it has been more clearly laid down in the account of the Cities of Refuge. Num. 35:1-3.

That the earth shall never be destroyed again by the “waters of a Flood.”

The “Sign” of this Covenant is the Rainbow, and the Covenant reaches until (2Pe 3:7) But the present heavens and the earth being kept in store by the same Word, are being kept for fire until the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

The rainbow, as we know today, is caused by a refraction of light waves from the sun, as it passes through the raindrops at the end of a rain shower.

Summary Gen. 9:8-17

The “covenant” with the sign of the rainbow.

This covenant is with all descendants of Noah, and with all the living things that came through the flood in the Ark.
God promised never to allow the destruction of the earth with a flood.
God has reserved the earth to be purged by fire but never destroyed completely. ( we do not know if the fire will be literal)

The Earth Will Remain Scriptures

(Gen 8:22) While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Using the KJ here because of verb tenses. (eth)

God is not a man that he should lie nor is He an Indian giver.

THE EARTH WILL REMAIN FOREVER

Is. 54 v9 says For this is as the waters of Noah to Me; for as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn from being angry with you and from rebuking you.

That’s right… God has SWORN never to be angry with us or to rebuke us in Christ.

Gen.9:18 Now the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And Ham was the father of Canaan.19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was populated.

Gen. 9:20 And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard.21 Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent.22 And Ham, (Hebrew, means numerous) the father of Canaan, (Hebrew, covenant) saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.23 But Shem (Hebrew, honest reputation, good name) and Japheth (Hebrew, may he expand, ancestor) took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

24 So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him.25 Then he said:

There is much speculation about exactly what happened here. It could have been sexual perversion; we do not know for sure.

Notice that Noah cursed Canaan, not Ham. Curses go to the 3rd and 4th generation, but blessings to 1,000’s of generations.( forever) Jesus redeemed us from the curse. Gal. 3:18

CANAAN [KANE un] (land of purple) — the name of a man and a land or region in the Old Testament:

The fourth son of Ham and the grandson of Noah (Gen. 9:18–27; 10:6, 15). Ham’s descendants were dispersed into several distinctive tribes, such as the Jebusites and the Zemarites. These people became known collectively in later years as the Canaanites, pagan inhabitants of the land that God promised to Abraham and his descendants. Under the leadership of Joshua, the people of Israel occupied the land of Canaan and divided it among the twelve tribes.

Gen.9:25 “Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants ;He shall be to his brethren.” 26 And he said: “Blessed be the Lord, The God of Shem, And may Canaan be his servant. 27 May God enlarge Japheth, And may he dwell in the tents of Shem; And may Canaan be his servant.”

Summary Gen. 9:18-27

Noah’s drunkenness.

This is the first mention in the Bible of the effect of fermented drink.
Noah may not have known what the effect would be.
If he did know, he did not show caution in the amount he drank.
Inebriation will cause the drinker to lose his inhibitions. (See Ephesians 5:18.) a. It was certainly known that nakedness was improper.
Noah’s nakedness within his tent did not protect him from being seen.

Noah is seen by his son, Ham (the father of Canaan).

When he saw his father’s nakedness, Ham had the opportunity to cover him, but he failed to do this.
His motive for telling his brothers is not recorded.
He may have been amused, and wanted his brothers to share in the humor.
He may have wanted to scandalize the incident, in disrespect for his
father.

If he had been concerned for his father’s indiscretion, he could have covered him. Much supposition is that there was sexual perversion.

Noah’s response when he becomes sober.

He pronounced a curse on Canaan, Ham’s son, rather than on Ham himself.
Many suppositions and opinions are expressed by commentators on Noah’s choice to curse Canaan.
Most of the opinions rest on the presumption that Canaan was involved in the incident, though there is no mention of this in the text.
The most likely opinion is that Canaan’s character followed that of his father, Ham, and caused him to be cursed for those inherited evil traits. (Compare Exodus 20:5b “…I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me…” )
Canaan’s punishment made him a servant to Shem and Japheth.
When Joshua and the Israelites conquered the promised land, they made the Canaanites “hewers of wood, and carriers of water.”

Noah also pronounced a blessing on Shem and Japheth.
Some commentators read verse 26, “God is blessed by the righteous life of Shem.” (Other versions of the sentence can be found, also.)
Noah’s statement, in verse 27, is – “May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem…”
(1)Many opinions have been written on the meaning of this language.

(2)The most likely opinion is that the descendants of Japheth will be more numerous than those of Shem, and they will live among the “Semites.”

What was the curse of Ham? Actually it was the curse of Canaan.

Gen. 9:20 And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard.21 Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent

Gen. 9:22 And Ham, (Hebrew, means numerous, also hot and sun burnt) the father of Canaan, (Hebrew, covenant) saw the nakedness of his father, (could have been sexual perversion or masturbation) and told his two brothers outside.

Ham was a son of Noah and his ancestors are of Ethiopia. One ancestor was for Cush, whose city is located just south of Egypt. Ham was said to be its father (Gen. 10:6). These later were the Canaanites. The Canaanites were to serve the descendants of Shem and Japheth (Gen. 9:26–27; Josh. 9:16–27).

Ham had four sons: Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan (Gen. 10:6). The tribe of Mizraim settled in Egypt, while the tribes of Cush and Put settled in other parts of Africa. The tribe of Canaan (means humiliated) populated Phoenicia and Palestine.

Gen. 9:23 But Shem ( Hebrew, honest reputation, good name) and Japheth (Hebrew, may he expand, ancestor) took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

Gen. 9:24 So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him.25 Then he said:

(Gen 9:25) Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

Notice that Noah cursed Canaan, not Ham. Curses go to the 3rd and 4th generation in the Old Testament, but blessings to 1,000’s of generations.(forever)

You know all the Ites!!

These people became known collectively in later years as the Canaanites, pagan inhabitants of the land that God promised to Abraham and his descendants. Under the leadership of Joshua, the people of Israel occupied the land of Canaan and divided it among the twelve tribes.

Reference from Jack Hayford: Ham, the father of Canaan, engages in some sort of sexual perversity (not Biblically clear)(9:21–22) and is cursed by Noah (actually the curse was on Cannan) . Ham’s immoral actions are projected and the future of one of his sons. Indeed, the Canaanites became known as a sexually and religiously degraded people. Thus, the descendants of Ham will serve the descendants of Shem and Japheth (25–27).

Gen.9:25 “Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants ;He shall be to his brethren.” 26 And he said: “Blessed be the Lord, The God of Shem, And may Canaan be his servant.

Gen. 9: 27 May God enlarge Japheth, And may he dwell in the tents of Shem; And may Canaan be his servant.”

An equally false theory, however, has unfortunately gained popular belief among some Bible readers. They have understood Noah’s curse on Canaan (Gen. 9:25) and his blessing on Shem and Japheth (Gen. 9:26–27) as providing adequate justification for the enslavement of blacks by whites, absolute nonsense!

The theory is usually connected to the possibility that the Hebrew word “Ham” (the father of Canaan) means “black.” But the problems with this line of argument are many:

(1) The proper name Ham does not mean “black” at all. The name means hot or sun burnt.

(2) Noah’s curse is not against Ham but against his son Canaan.

(3) All known peoples grouped under the name of “Canaanites” (descendants of Canaan) were Caucasoid, not Negroid.

(4) Nothing in the text of Genesis 9 indicates that the curse was lasting and could be expected to surface again thousands of years after it was originally uttered.

Curses in the Old Testament went to 3 or 4 generations. Numbers 14:18 English Standard Version (ESV) ‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’

(5) Noah’s prediction that Canaanites would someday be subservient to S(h)emites was adequately fulfilled in, for example, Joshua 9.

Because the inhabitants of Gibeon and other cities (Josh. 9:17) had “worked craftily . . . and pretended to be [peace-loving] ambassadors” (Josh. 9:4), Joshua said to them, “You are cursed, and none of you shall be freed from being slaves—woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God” (Josh. 9:23).

In other words, Noah’s curse in Genesis 9 was part of the Lord’s overall strategy of subduing the land of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua and the armies of Israel.

Questions to get to the truth of this: What action of Ham compared to the action of Shem and Japheth ? What was Noah’s response to what Ham did ?What may be implied about Canaan’s character? What was Noah’s response to Shem (ancestor of Israel) and Japheth?

From the genealogy in Genesis 10, the sons of Shem, Ham, and Japheth in the family tree below.Noah’s 3 sons:

Japheth- his sons-(Gen 10:2) The sons of Japheth: Gomer and Magog (Russian)and Madai (Central Asia) and Javan (Greece)and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras.(Gen 10:3) And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz and Riphath and Togarmah. (Gen 10:4) And the sons of Javan: Elishah and Tarshish (Persia)and Kittim (Cypress) and Dodanim.

Shem- his sons-(Gen 10:22) The sons of Shem: Elam and Asshur and Arpachshad and Lud and Aram.(Gen 10:23) And the sons of Aram: Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash,(Gen 10:24) And Arpachshad fathered Salah; and Salah fathered Eber.(where the name Hebrew comes from)(Gen 10:25) And two sons were born to Eber.(first Hebrew) The name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided. And his brother’s name was Joktan.(Gen 10:26) And Joktan fathered Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah,(Gen 10:27) and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah,(Gen 10:28) and Obal and Abimael and Sheba,(Gen 10:29) and Ophir and Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.(Gen 10:30) And their dwelling was from Mesha, as you go to Sephar, a mountain of the east.(Gen 10:31) These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, and after their nations.

Ham- his sons-(Gen 10:6) And the sons of Ham: Cush (Ethiopia) and Mizraim (Egypt) and Phut (Persia) and Canaan. (means humiliated)(Gen 10:7) And the sons of Cush: Seba (Ethiopia) and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabtecha. And the sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. (Cushites) (Gen 10:8) And Cush fathered Nimrod. He began to be a mighty one in the earth.(Gen 10:9) He was a mighty hunter before Jehovah. Therefore it is said, Even as Nimrod (Babel,Babylon) the mighty hunter before Jehovah.(Gen 10:10) And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, (Babylon) and Accad, and Calneh, (Assyria) in the land of Shinar.(Gen 10:11) Out of that land he went forth to Asshur. And he built Nineveh, (capital of Assyria) and the city Rehoboth, (in Palestine) and Calah,(Gen 10:12) and Resen between Nineveh and Calah, which is a great city.(Gen 10:13) And Mizraim fathered Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim,(Gen 10:14) and Pathrusim and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines) and Caphtorim.(Gen 10:15) And Canaan fathered Sidon, his first-born, and Heth,(Gen 10:16) and the Jebusite and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,(Gen 10:17) and the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,(Gen 10:18) and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. And afterward the families of the Canaanites were spread abroad.(Gen 10:19) And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon (Palestine)(as you come to Gerar) to Gaza, as you go in towards Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboim, even to Lasha.

These were the Hebrew’s later enemies.

Which families were of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness to whom Moses wrote Genesis? From which family did Abram (Abraham) come? (Gen. 10:24, 25; 11:10–26) Which family had enslaved them in Egypt? (Gen. 10:6, 13, 14) Which family would they dispossess from the Promised Land? (Gen. 10:6, 15–19) How is Shem identified in Genesis 10:21? Shem is identified as the father of Eber or the Father of the Hebrews.

(Gen 10:31) These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, and after their nations.(Gen 10:32) These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations. And from these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

THE RIGHTEOUS LINE- FROM THE SONS OF SHEM COMES JESUS CHRIST

The suppositions, guesses, and opinions about these matters are so diverse and so numerous that they tend to distract us from the moral and spiritual lessons to be learned in this very interesting ancient narrative.

Gen. 9:28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died. Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood

Summary Gen. 9:28-29

Noah’s long life can be closely compared to those of other patriarchs. (Adam – 930 years, Methuselah – 969 years, Noah – 950 years.)

Bible students should note that after the Flood, the ages of the patriarchs grew shorter in the following generations.

Moses is traditionally credited with writing, “As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, or if due to strength, eighty years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; for soon it is gone and we fly away.” Psalm 90:10

What is long life for the Believer?

SONS OF NOAH

So these three sons of Noah, who with their wives came out of the ark, became the parents of the three great classifications of people that then overspread the earth. According to historical record, you might break it down this way:

Out of the line of Shem came all the great “religions” (although I don’t like that word), Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. When we refer to the line of Shem, the primary man is Abraham.
Out of the line of Ham we have a lot of the original discoveries and inventions .
Out of the line of Japheth, even though they were primarily uncivilized barbarians, came a people that became expert in the arts, sciences, music (the Beethovens and Tchaikovskys), and the inventors of the industrial revolution (not taking credit away from contributions made by Oriental immigrants who came to America:

Come back to the migrations of the peoples as the Bible lays them out, and as we illustrated last time. The Japhethites migrated into what is present day Europe and western Russia; the Hamites ended up primarily in the land of Canaan and points south; and the sons of Shem populated the lands of the Middle East. Some prefer to put the oriental peoples in the line of Shem. Those three basic groups of people come from these three sons of Noah.

Genesis 10:6,8,9

“And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.”

Genesis Chapter 10

INTRODUCTION – The descendants of Noah are listed in brief, with many of the names being important to later events and places and nations in Bible history. After this, the events after the Flood lead up to the early events in the life of Abraham.

Gen.10:1-32: ALL THE BEGETS

(Gen 10:1-5) Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood. The sons of Japheth: Gomer and Magog and Madai and Javan and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras. And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz and Riphath and Togarmah. And the sons of Javan: Elishah and Tarshish and Kittim and Dodanim. By these were the coasts of the nations divided in their lands, every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

Summary Gen. 10:1:1-5

The descendants of Japheth.

One of the 7 sons was named “Magog.”
Magog probably founded a nation. Ezekiel 38:2 “Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him…” (This verse was written about 1000 years after the events in Genesis 10.)
This passage in Ezekiel contains the names of two other sons of Japheth – Meshech and Tubal.
In the figurative language of the book of Revelation (dispensational view), we find the name again. Revelation 20:7-8 And when the thousand years are completed, satan will be released from his prison, [8] and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore.

The genealogical line of Japheth is continued through two of his other sons.

The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz and Riphath and Togarmah.
The name, Ashkenaz, is found 2 other times in the Old Testament.
It refers to a nation or kingdom in Jeremiah 51:2. Lift up a signal in the land, blow a trumpet among the nations! Consecrate the nations against her, summon against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni and Ashkenaz; appoint a marshal against her, bring up the horses like bristly locusts.
The sons of Javan were Elishah and Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim. a. The son named “Tarshish” may have founded the country of that name, which is mentioned 25 times in the Old Testament.
(1)One prominent mention is about Solomon’s fleet of trading ships. 2 Chronicles 9:21 For the king had ships which went to Tarshish with the servants of Huram; once every three years the ships of Tarshish came bringing gold and silver, ivory and apes and peacocks.

(2)Another interesting mention of this name is in the flight of the prophet Jonah from God. Jonah 1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

The son named Kittim may have founded a region, also, and is mentioned four times in the Old Testament. One example is Numbers 24:24. “But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim, and they shall afflict Asshur and shall afflict Eber; so they also shall come to destruction.”

(Gen 10:6-20) And the sons of Ham: Cush and Mizraim and Phut and Canaan. And the sons of Cush: Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabtecha. And the sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

Gen.10:8 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth.9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.”10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.11 From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah,12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city).

(Gen 10:13-20) And Mizraim fathered Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim, and Pathrusim and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines) and Caphtorim. And Canaan fathered Sidon, his first-born, and Heth, and the Jebusite and the Amorite, and the Girgashite, and the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite, and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. And afterward the families of the Canaanites were spread abroad. And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon (as you come to Gerar) to Gaza, as you go in towards Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboim, even to Lasha. These were the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

Summary Gen. 10:6-20

The descendants of Ham.

The names of 3 of his 4 sons can also be found as place-names.
Cush is mentioned about 10 times, referring to a region, or the inhabitants of that region.
Moses married a woman of Cush. Numbers 12:1 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had married a Cushite woman)…
Cush was the father of Nimrod, described as a “Mighty Hunter.”

(1)Nimrod was the ruler over several lands including Babel, where God confused the languages of the builders of a great tower (See ch. 11).

(2)Nimrod is also credited with building several cities, including Nineveh in Assyria.

Another son of Cush was Raamah, and the region that took his name was connected to the land of Sheba. Ezekiel 27:22 “The traders of Sheba and Raamah, they traded with you; they paid for your wares with the best of all kinds of spices, and with all kinds of precious stones, and gold.”

Mizraim fathered 7 sons; one, Casluhim, became the father of the Philistines.
Put (spelled Phut in the KJV) is mentioned as a region 5 times. Example: Ezekiel 30:5 “Ethiopia, Put, Lud, all Arabia, Libya, and the people of the land that is in league will fall with them by the sword.”
Canaan is mentioned numerous times, referring to the region settled later by the Israelites as the “Promised Land.” Leviticus 25:38 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.”
One son of Canaan was named Sidon, which also designated a coastal city of Lebanon. Matthew 15:21 And Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon.
Another son was named Heth, the father of the Hittites. Genesis 23:10 Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth; even of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying…
Other Canaanites were the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites.
(1)Some of these Canaanite peoples are mentioned in promises of God.

(2)Exodus 23:23 “For My angel will go before you and bring you in to the land of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will completely destroy them.”

(3)Deuteronomy 7:1 “When the Lord your God shall bring you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and shall clear away many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and stronger than you…”

(4)The Jebusites retained control over Jerusalem, in the area occupied by the tribe of Judah, even after all of Canaan was conquered by the Israelites. Joshua 15:63 Now as for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the sons of Judah could not drive them out; so the Jebusites live with the sons of Judah at Jerusalem until this day. (Many centuries later, David captured the city of Jerusalem during his reign as king, and made it his location for building the Temple. See 2 Samuel 5:6-10, and 2 Chronicles 3:1.)

Gen.10:21-32- begets continued:

(Gen 10:21-25) Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram. And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash. And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber. And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.

Gleanings from this genealogy of Shem.

From the birth of Shem’s son, to the birth of Terah, the father of Abraham, was 220 years.
The ages of each generation gradually declined. (Shem–600; Arpachshad–438; Shelah–433; Eber–464; Peleg–239; Reu–239; Serug–230; Nahor–148.)
Two names in this list are connected with other information.
Eber – Genesis 10:21 “And also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the older brother of Japheth, children were born.” (Eber is the 3rd genera-tion from Shem. It is not known why Moses included this comment.)
Peleg – Genesis 10:25 “And two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.”
The name Peleg means “divided,” so he was probably born at the time when God the people’s language was divided.
This gives us a time frame from the end of the Flood to the dividing of the people.
(1)Shem had his first son 2 years after the Flood.

(2)The years of the generations from Arpachshad to Peleg were 99.

(3)Therefore the dividing of the people was about 101 years after the Flood.

(NOTE: God has given this information to us to help us understand how nations and cities and peoples were developed in the ancient world.)

Gen.10:26-32 And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,27 And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,28 And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,29 And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan.30 And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east. These were the sons of Shem,(Hebrew name) according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations.32 These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.

Summary of Gen. 10:21-32

The descendants of Shem (“The older brother of Japheth”).

Shem is said to be “the father of all the children of Eber.” Eber was apparently a region of that name. Numbers 24:24 “But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim, and they shall afflict Asshur (or Assyria) and shall afflict Eber; so they also shall come to destruction.”
From Shem came the two great peoples of the Old Testament, the Israelites from Isaac, and the Ishmaelites from Ishmael (both fathered by Abraham).
Shem had 5 sons, 3 of which gave their names to places.
Elam. Acts 2:8-9 “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born? [9] Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia…”
Asshur (father of the Assyrians). Ezekiel 27:23 “Haran, Canneh, Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad traded with you.”
Aram (Though there are other men of this name, he may have originated the Aramaic language, and fathered the Syrians). 1 Kings 19:15 And the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram…” (Or, Syria.)
Other descendants of Shem are connected with places.
Sheba. 1 Kings 10:1 Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to test him with difficult questions.
Ophir. 1 Kings 9:28 And they went to Ophir, and took four hundred and twenty talents of gold from there, and brought it to King Solomon.
Havilah. 1 Samuel 15:7 So Saul defeated the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is east of Egypt.
